Here is my favourite

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

— John Gillespie Magee, Jr

Sorry about that, it didn’t format like a poem should, but the words were there.

That’s a pleasant poem even though there’s no such thing as God.

Acts of Kindness by Donna C. Belliveau

When I was cold and lonely and nobody wanted me, You took me in and saved me, and I thank you, gratefully. So, I’ll stand here right beside you each and every single day And do my best to keep you safe and not get in your way. The only things I really want, if given any choice, Is your kind hand upon my head and just to hear your voice. So, I’ll sit right here beside you, as you read or watch TV, And when you speak my name, you know I’ll wag contentedly. And, if you’re in any danger, I’ll defend you with my life, For you kept me warm and fed me, and relieved me of my strife. So, I’ll lie right here beside you and watch over as you sleep, And you’ll never have to worry; you are safely in my keep. But there’s one thing I need to know, and you must promise me, That when my time with you is up, you’ll help to set me free. Please stay there right beside me and hold me ’till the end, In your final act of kindness, let me go, my faithful friend.

Just a shame that humans can’t have a pain free and dignified end on demand.

Yeah we can. People get euthanased in Australian hospitals all the time. It might not be as ‘on demand’ as many people would like it, but it’s not true to pretend its not happening.

It is true that I walked away from my mother’s side at midnight and told the nurse at the desk that she can’t take anymore and that could she her made comfortable and the next morning at dawn they rang me to say that she was gone They allowed me a nights sleep.

Religious concerns aside, people worry about it making very sick people vulnerable to exploitation.

The longer you keep them alive in pain the more they can be exploited.
