I read a recent study that seems to indicate we may misinterpret some animals mannerisms as affection/attachment to us when in facts its manipulation to get something they want from us.

The magpie was walking around what used to be my lawn, stridently calling in a tone that would normally scare people. Which I interpreted as; Hurry up and remove all the rubbish you took out of the shed and dumped on my dinner table!

Probably better than we may imagine. Lie still and the bear will think you are dead.

It’s been proved that even chimpanzees using human-based sign language can communicate between themselves using that sign language concepts that are too subtle for humans to decode.

If by “communicate with dogs and dolphins” you mean “train”, then animals that can be trained include horses, elephants, monkeys, bears, seals, cattle, birds of many sorts (incl. chickens, pigeons, raptors and parrots), cats big and small, pigs, goldfish, small mammals (incl. hamsters, rabbits, rats and mice), and llamas.

Some wild birds deliberately communicate with humans using a special call that humans know means “I can see you”, according to one Attenborough program. Generally it is not in the best interests of an individual of one species to let another species know what it is thinking.

I’ve often pondered about a description of the communication methods described by Dianne Fossey as she described a formal meeting between different families of gorillas. Communication by smell must be the most fundamental form of communication by all species (down to chemotropism in bacteria). Humans can communicate by smell with ants, in some sense. Touch and gesture are other common communication methods. A single grunt together with a shrug can carry a wealth of abstract meaning.
