Organic molecules detected in infant star system
In a breakthrough discovery, the presence of complex organic molecules, the building blocks of life, has been detected by astronomers in a protoplanetary disk surrounding a young star.
The latest discovery hints that the conditions that spawned our Earth and Sun are not found only in our universe.
The astronomers used Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to make this discovery which revealed that the protoplanetary disk surrounding the million-year-old star MWC 480 is full of methyl cyanide (CH3CN), a complex carbon-based molecule and their simpler cousin, hydrogen cyanide (HCN).
