I’m thinking of getting this for the redoubt.
I’ll only be there say on average 1 day a week and only use it for browsing, reading the news and weather, fourming and reading my email, I don’t download stuff.
Is the speed acceptable? is 1 gig enough?
It costs 3.5k to buy the kit so I’d like a bit of feedback first.

I use my phone “for browsing, reading the news and weather, fourming and reading my email” and don’t often come close to 1GB a month – on average I’d say I use it no more than an hour a day. However, my speed is usually higher than 512k/256k – assuming that they mean kbps. I just ran a speed test on my phone and got 4Mbps/1Mbps and that is, mostly, bearable but I don’t know what 512k/256k would be like…

I like the first bit about data, the second bit about speed not so much.

What’s phone coverage like on the redoubt? Also depends on how good your eyes are and whether you want to read stuff on your phone…

You can tether your phone to your lap top, tablet, etc…

There is no phone coverage there.

If he was going to do that, just get a dongle modem.

Does the satellite internet need to be portable? Given that it is to be used in the one place? Can’t you get a fixed system?

Since there’s no mobile coverage it’s a moot point. Carry on.

I don’t qualify for the NBN satellite because it is not my permanent residence.
The NBN satellite is chockers anyway until a couple of new satellites go up later this year.
The cost of a fixed non NBN system is prohibitive.

Telstra for example.

And it costs a couple of grand for installation.

The Ant portable system seems the best solution if it provides a passably service.

maybe have a squizz at the whirlpool forum. woodie didn’t think much of his satellite set-up but that was a few years ago so things may have improved for him.
