- i still think your will double your returns if you pick the broc for about a month.
- your fancy tom seeds are up in the hothouse as are all the spring onions.

Going to give it a shot. Saves buying it at the shops. Not that we buy it often.

Oh good. The seeds I sowed back before my dad came down for heart surgery, haven’t germinated yet.

last time i pulled a cauliflower, the soil went all over it, and couldn’t wash it all out. so now i always cut the heads for cauliflowers and broccoli, before removing the plant.

Always interesting reading what grows when in different places. Mine bolted to seed, even the progressive harvest of side shoots was short-lived this year and now most stems have been pulled, split and enjoyed by the poultry.

Not sure that the weather is entirely to lame either. I feel that the switch in suppliers to Bunnings, of “budget range vegetable seedlings”, away from Pohlmann’s might have something to do with it. Not necessarily just varieties but how the seedlings were started and their pre-sale conditions.

Can’t say I blame him: the homegrown would taste like butter even with no flavouring additives (salt, pepper)

Broccoli Casserole

A woman goes to her boyfriend’s parents’ house for dinner.

This is to be her first time meeting the family and she is very nervous.
They all sit down and begin eating a fine meal.

The woman is beginning to feel a little discomfort, thanks to her nervousness and the broccoli casserole. The gas pains are almost making her eyes water. Left with no other choice, she decides to relieve herself a bit and lets out a dainty fart.

It wasn’t loud, but everyone at the table heard the poof.
Before she even had a chance to be embarrassed, her boyfriend’s father looked over at the dog that had been snoozing under the woman’s chair, and said in a rather stern voice, ‘Skippy!’.

The woman thought, ‘This is great!’ and a big smile came across her face.
A couple of minutes later, she was beginning to feel the pain again.
This time, she didn’t even hesitate. She let a much louder and longer rrrrrip..

The father again looked at the dog and yelled, ‘Dammit Skippy!’
Once again the woman smiled and thought ‘Yes!’ A few minutes later the woman had to let another rip. This time she didn’t even think about it.
She let a fart rip that rivaled a train whistle blowing.

Once again, the father looked at the dog with disgust and yelled,

Dammit Skippy, get away from her, before she sh*ts on you!’

I see cooking food as a way to relax as well. Maybe its just cos’ I love food in general.

spuds
carrots
broccoli
cauli
asparagus

these are to go on the plate next to the chicken pie that has eggs sliced on top of the mixture, full of meat, peas, capsicum, peas and white sauce.

Yes I do preponderate them… was getting some nasty comments at one stage last year. You should be able to post a comment and then it’ll say it’ll be posted after I have checked it.

Going to be 20 here today…. so I’ll have the elf out in the sun…keeping me company while I start the no-dig extension.

Not sure how far I get with it today…..I’ll just plug along until I can’t do it anymore.

Asked elf if we had a crow bar as I’ll need to lift a couple of sleepers…no we don’t have one.

So I’ll use a shovel. The sleepers haven’t been moved for at least 4 or 5 years.

Off to have a huge feed of weet-bix….. Think I’m going to need it:)

No wonder we call Bunnings “The Toy Shop”….. they have the best toys:)

He’s worried I won’t share now…..LOL

My arm is still vibrating from the motor.

No wonder we call Bunnings “The Toy Shop”….. they have the best toys:)

I hope the elf picks up.

So do I. This virus is a doosy.

Paper down in place and bunny litter boxes clean out and their poop added to the new no-dig area.

Taking photos as I go along.

Well the new no-dig area is up and braking down into soil as I type and you read:D

Less lawn and I have my eye on another area for next year……… early in the year for that matter.

Just coming in to load up the photos and see if they are okay…have a shower and then do some story telling over my my blog.

Elf is out the back, hugging his new toy.

Once they were big enough to support the leeks. A couple of months after I had planted them. This left them to benefit all the sun for growing, before I started to blanch them.

So leave them for roughly 8 weeks and then put the toilet roll over them, i would have thought they would have been to big and green by then. Will the green turn to white?

Yes……. you’ll know when they are big enough to support the leeks….say about a pencil thick. That gives a better idea, as they might grow quicker you way….lol

I am so proud of my effort today……. I have a new area for growing vegies and I had to do it all myself….

I learnt how to lift sleepers and pavers that were compacted with soil and lawn.

Just love the whole idea of another area used for feeding my family and not just lawn to gobble up water.

Yay I’ve been waiting for that update :)

Lucky I think I will copy your methodology when I set up my raised vegie beds. I am going to fill roughly half with junk sand, then lay down paper and instead of buying ready made soil, try to make my own soil on top of that. I like the idea of growing something quite soon, instead of having to sit and wait for a long time.

I’m not sure I will stick to pure no-dig though – if you used the same ingredients but you did dig it in and around a bit.. it will still end up making nice soil, right??

Thanks for the kinds words Bon. Yes you can do this….. If I was in a hurry to grow food from the actual area I’d use some compost and mushroom compost with my worm casting to put directly around the seedlings.

I don’t see why you can’t. Elf asked me that question today….. its the same makeup of ingredients, just its mixed up and not layered.

OK, thanks :) I’ll just tackle it in a fairly experimental way I think, depending on the different materials I have available at the time!

Pumpkins sounds like an awesome thing to grow first – keep it nice and shaded to stop it drying out.

Yes……. think it’ll be hot here this summer… so the area isn’t overly thick yet and I don’t want it drying out .

WooHoo! Mr O40’s said I can have another area of the lawn for a vegie patch !! I have to decide whether to make it a “no dig” or not. I rather fancy a raised bed this time. Hmmmmmmm food for thought !!

We are already eating so much from the garden and there is still more to come in food varieties.

Last summer I concentrated on feeding the soil for about 3 months and its paid off. Big time:D

This year I have a feeling its gonna be a bumper summer for us.

Buggerdamnit…………

9 plants to find homes for and not the room for them. So off to the toy shop to buy some mushroom compost and goodies to plant the seedlings out in….. in the new no-dig area.

Then the new area will support the zucchini, nugget pumpkins and squash.

All worked out fine in the end:)

Now for a late lunch and a rest I think.

I was just reading about how you treated your vegie patch soil for 3 months and you got great rewards by doing this.

What did you actually do ?

I kept adding duck, chicken & rabbit bedding to the areas. Along with sheep manure. Compost when it was ready as well. Just digged it in and left it to rest. I am a firm believer in feeding the soil and this in return will feed the plants.

I still feed leafy greens worm wee and charlie carp and home made manure tea and Pepe’s pigeon poop/water mixture when he gives me some (just not all at the one time) for those little “power boosts”. Then I get a result like I am having this season.

I have knocked off in the garden until next week sometime…… My body is sore and tired from all the playing of the last couple of days. Turning the green manure was hard this morning. Done though. I will add some gypsum and that bag of sheep manure next week too. Sooooooooooooo glad I mowed the lawn last night.

been browsing through some country real estate listings. certainly plenty to choose from from run down old shacks to mansions with magnificent gardens. Just depends on how much you want to spend!

Blasted birds are out scrounging around the yard…I’ll have to keep an eye on the area in case they build a new one there again.

OK, we all know you put good goodies into the ground, what is your pH like when it comes to Rhubarb? Rhubarb grows well in the acidic soils of the Adelaide Hills yet you in the North flatlands of Adelaide would have an Alkaline soil, what with all that limestone in the area….

What is your pH?

Put heaps in when I planted it out. Pfft…….. bluddy plant….. Look at my garden and I can’t grow a poxy rhubarb plant….LOL

Thanks I’ll check tomorrow. Pretty sure I had that ok, as I took my plant book and pH testing kit out….. stay tuned.

Ours have built in a Japanese Maple this year. Too high for me to get to. Last year it was a hanging basket and the year before in an orchid pot.

Blasted birds are out scrounging around the yard…I’ll have to keep an eye on the area in case they build a new one there again.

I have a pair of noisy miners that have built their nest out of bits of my spanish moss that is growing over a branch beside their nest. Talk about convenience!

I like noisy miners, such cheeky birds, full of characters. One sits in the tree over the cat’s cage and teases her. He’s done it so often that she now completely ignores him LOL.

Now, Indian myners – those I’d like to take slingshot to!

Now this is a *_very*_ interesting photo of your rhubarb Pepe. As its crown is above the soil. I had mine like that and was given the impression it should be further down in the soil….. hence a mad dash outside and a revamp of #9. when I first bought him.

I have done the rounds: picked up some of my motorcycle parts that were sent off to be blasted, bought a Hot Devil Weed Killer and some bonsai potting mix and fertiliser from Bonsai Art. Also had a little wander around Garden World but resisted the urge to buy any plants. Did buy a little bonsai bridge for my group planting with mock river though :)

Schinnus Mollus (sp?) I think. A popular hardy plant but I see it in so many vacant blocks of land I think of it as a weed.

acanthus is a weed so they would go very well thank. mind you my garden is made up of legal weeds – poppies, daisies, hollyhocks, and lots more. they are all carefree and practically no water so they water might be kept for something more thirsty..

it should be easier to understand now.

the damp area by the rainwater tanks is possibly better used as a bog garden or pond area. these types of damp gardens are very good for birds, frogs and spiders.

Lucky, I cut the flower stems off my corriander and basil and they both kept growing more leaves. I’ve never had parsley go to seed. I planted some when we first moved in and it lasted about 3 years without any help from me. The drought eventually got it.

Been outside and given the tomatoes a feed of potash & charlie carp. (found that in the cupboard) fed all the leafy greens, also #‘s 10 & 11.

Tied the tomatoes up to their stakes more.

Flossy & Cadbury have clean hutches, their bedding went onto the new no dig garden area.

Going to leave the netting off the new no-dig area.

Inside now to make us some hamburgers with the works.
