I have heard that it’s not Durham, I have heard a story, going back all those years, any info out there? I won’t mention what I have heard, don’t want to cloud the issue.

A quick Google search will reveal that the stories must have been correct.

Judith Mavis Durham AO (born Judith Mavis Cock;
Jebus!
We all know it was Rastus.
I heard most of that, but that Durham was chosen because she lived in Durham Rd Surrey Hills at the time of her name change.

It was her mother’s surname.
True story: my mother’s maiden name was Dick.

Yes.
Really? A thread because Durham’s name was changed from ‘Cock’.
Bob I’ve known preschoolers who are more mature than you.

It wasn’t very good discussion…
The surname Cock is derived from the Dutch and Flemish surname de Cock, alternately found as de Cook or de Kok and can be Anglicanised as Cook, and comes from the occupation of a cook.
The name Cock is also a variant spelling of Cox, which is of Old English or Welsh origin, and developed independently of the Dutch and Flemish name.

I didn’t mention her name, and I didn’t know if it was true, I was interested if the name “Durham” was selected because I lived in Redvers St Surrey Hills which was close to Durham Rd at the time I first heard about this.

She may have copied Dame Nelly Melba and taken a geographical location for her stage-name.
My JD story. I was living in Toowoomba and had gone up to Noosa for the weekend with a mate. We decided to do a pub or two in the area and ended up in Pomona for a few bevies. I don’t know why, but I wandered past the local theatre and saw an ad for JD playing a concert that afternoon. It was her second ever show for a local comeback. Just her out front and her hubby on the piano. Would have been about ’85. A great show, she really does have a magnificent voice.

My mother’s maiden name is also a body part. Not Dick, though. She was teased through school because of it and it’s the reason she didn’t go back to her maiden name after divorcing my dad.

My half-siblings have a body part for their family name :P one brother has a combined name that has turned out to be one of those nominative determinism thingies.
True story: My family name and my mothers maiden name are really normal and uncontroversial.
True story: I knew a woman whose married name was the same as her maiden name.

No. It was Attard. It’s a common Maltese name and the suburb in which I grew up was also known as “Mini Malta”. BTW, the Maltese were a pretty good bunch at school :)

Yep. I grew up close-by.
I don’t remember my mum ever mentioning Maltese kids; both mum and dad grew up in wentworthville.

Lots of Maltese in Wentworthville too. Mr Speedy grew up there and occasionally we laugh at the list of Maltese surnames that we’re both familiar with. The Maltese often had big vegetable gardens in the backyard and attended church every Sunday morning. We were not devout Catholics, so every Monday morning I felt like I had missed out on some big social event that everyone else at the school had attended.
Oh yeah, I’ve heard about the gardens. Mulberry trees on almost every corner… you just don’t get that anymore.
A local real estate agents surname is Krogan which is somewhat appropriate for many people who sell real estate

I can remember when Judith was advised to alter her family name she selected “Durham” as she was living in Durham rd Surrey Hills at the time, which was just up the road from Redvers st

It could have been coincidence but it also could have had no relation to the name but more to the bearer.
She may have not got along with carring the name of her father for various reasons.
