I have heard that any establishment that has “Royal” in their title ie Royal Melbourne Hospital, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, etc can’t refuse entry onto their premises of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, even if they have “ dogs not permitted” signs. Can anyone confirm this?

Hahahaha.

I think guide dogs are the only dogs allowed into places like this, and they need to be working at the time.

“Contrary to popular rumour, there is no Act of Parliament referring to King Charles spaniels being allowed anywhere in the Palace of Westminster. We are often asked this question and have thoroughly researched it. The House of Commons Information Office Factsheet G7 Some Traditions and Customs of the House states that ‘Dogs, except guide dogs, are not generally allowed in the Palace of Westminster.’ There is no evidence whatsoever, that spaniels have ever been officially exempt from this rule, and any dogs which have been resident in the palace with their owners were confined to private apartments, such as the Speaker’s or Lord Chancellor’s residences, and not permitted free run through the palace. Having said that, there is one recorded example of a dog, other than a guide dog being in the House of Commons chamber. On page 309 of the House of Commons Journal, in the entry for 14 May 1606. It states that ‘A strange spanyell of mouse-colour came into the House.‘”

I thought working guide dogs could go any where they were instructed by their owners.

Sorry Robert.

No I was referring to any location that has accepted royal patronage, not just any public space.

I think it’s ironic that a King Charles spaniel has such a round head.

Sadly, the breed suffers from a defect called syringomyelia and would probably benefit from a pointier head.

I know this isn’t what you are talking about, but your comment got me wondering how common it is that a guide dog’s instincts over-ride it’s training.

Bungee jumping, for example.

I was on a train on one occasion, and a guy was on it with his guide dog, at the next station another guy got on with his dog
and it went into a barking frenzy at the guide dog, I challenged the guy with the psycho dog and he said it was part of the guide dogs training assessment, felt a real dick head, but was impressed with the training process.
