A double post. Well blow me down. Anyway about garlic.
I have just pulled up my garlic because the leaves were slowly going brown as expected and there were no bulbs on the ends. These were planted back in February or rather they came up in Feb. I grew garlic in the same pot the previous year and when I pulled them for use I must have left one full bulb in there because it started to grow.
I did all the right things through the 6 months your supposed to do and got “nothing” to show for it. Why?
I also recently was reading a 2006 Burks Backyard Mag and they said that garlic should be pulled during the second summer in the ground.. Everyone here talks about 6months. Last years crop was pretty good after 6 months growth.
I’m a bit confused now and I’m willing to listed to what anyone has to say.
I have also been reading the old GA Archives and all seem to say “6 months.”

i cant even remember when i planted mine.
I planted my garlic in march, and according to the sites I’ve read on it, they should be starting to get yellowed leaves by now , but they are green and lush , not a dry spot on them.

i planted in march and will harvest at xmas.
however all my life i have popped the garlic bulbs in the ground as they started to sprout in the pantry. as far as i can tell they produce all year round and it depends on the type and the heat of the sun as to how long it takes to harvest. they are slow growing – so like onions and leeks they will need a minimum of 6 months to produce and probably 9 months if you intend to store them.
20th of april this year when would that be ready to haverset still lush and green.

you can start using it when the bulbs are separating into their divisions (corms?). this is too young to store, but it is good to use straight away.
so start picking, one at a time, november/ december – and then harvest the remaining crop when the tops die off.

Yeah i think the day before X mas, mum normally cooks alot with garlic then. and some will be for the chooks water.
I always remember “Plant on St Patrick’s day(Mar 17) and harvest on Cup day (Nov)
It works for me :)
hmm…i just pulled one up, and it wasn’t ready….so have to wait longer. plants don’t have an exact calendar when to be ready, as even your local micro-climate and feeding/watering regime will affect such things, apart from sometimes major variations in weather patterns at large.
wish there was more local knowledge about these things that are connected with observations in nature…those are usually more accurate.
a lot of my late planted carrots (march/april) are still small also. getting the usual melbourne horrible spring weather at moment. one day it’s warm, and next day cold and windy. sure knocks about any early planted out seedlings. probably better off doing most spring planting and planting out here late november. darn winds…sigh.
