What device would be best to have on the end of a slow 1GB per month satellite connection?
It just needs to read email, news and do foruming and a bit of google earthing if GE is not too heavy on data.
I’m guessing it will be a cheap pad of some sort.

The local computer shop has reconditioned computers for a bit under $300.

If it’s anything like here the landline is very poor copper wire which barely supports dial up. That’s why I switched to satellite.

you could get a board that converts electrical signal to light eg fibre optic, you then string out a FO cable to your house

It’d be the mirror-image of the NBN the L/NP wanted:

Instead of FO-to-node, copper-to-house, you’d have copper-to-node, FO-to-house.

It’s not an option. The decision to go satellite has already been taken and is not reversible. That is not the question any more. The question is what device to suit a satellite connection.

I’d suggest one of the all-in-one desktop PCs, or a cheap laptop will suffice.

You’d be better off caching google earth when not in the styx.

As for device, any cheap laptop would do, don’t think tablets are very user friendly with google earth/typing a lot – I prefer keyboard + mouse to trackpads.

the power authority had the same problem with an installation

they just had to run a line to the top of the hill and receive/ broadcast from there

The urban fire brigade had to fir VHF radios to their vehicles as the more normal urban UHF couldn’t negotiate the hill & valleys here.

MSY has nine completely new notebook computers for under $300, why buy reconditioned? eg:

ACER Aspire ES1-311-C9XM
CPU: Intel Celeron N2840 2.16GHz(Turbo 2.58GHz)
OS: Windows 8.1 64bit
RAM: 2GB DDR3
HDD: 500GB SATA
Screen: 13.3” LED Screen

or
HP Stream11-D008TU
Intel Celeron N2840 2.16GHz(Turbo 2.58GHz)
11.5” LED Screen

or
ASUS Ultralight X205TA-Bing-FD015BS
Intel Quad-Core Z3735F 1.33GHz(Turbo 1.83GHz)
11.6” LED Screen

or
ASUS Ultralight F453MA-BING-SWX355B
Intel Celeron N2840 2.16GHz(Turbo 2.58GHz)
14” LED Screen
