With all the drivel, crappy, TV shows the local stations are putting to air to save money, I wonder how long it will be before we get a show called “Competitive nose picking” or “Creative shit plaiting”?

This sort of question would best be confined to chat IMO
Noted, sorry.

Australian FTA TV channels are required to air almost 1500 hours of Australian content this year and there are a number of incentives to do so. ref
In 2013, all three commercial stations (including their multichannel digital channels) exceeded their required quota for Australian content. ref (The report for 2014 will be available in June or July this year.)
It would be nice if we could see some quality content produced by commercial stations. Australia has a good history with quality drama; think A Country Practice, Blue Heelers, Miss Fisher, Dr Blake etc. Our comedy… not so much.
Much of the current reality TV is based on ideas that work overseas, and it’s very cheap to produce. Gems like Celebrity Splash (originally a UK production, I believe) only require some B-grade celebrities willing to look like an idiot in order to re-start their flagging careers and a fancy set. I believe that particular show rated so badly, the final episodes were never shown (thankfully). I’ve recently seen advertisements for a reality show made from dashcam footage. Yes, dickhead drivers will finally be shamed on national TV. Wonder what gems I have on my computer that I can contribute…?
However, as low as reality TV is, I don’t think we’ll ever get to Creative Nose Picking. Maybe in Japan, but not here.

I actually disagree. There are very few times during the day when there is nothing worth watching on any TV channel. In those few times – watch a DVD. I find the quality of free-to-air TV shows now to be much better than they were when I was young, very much better than in the USA, and infinitely better than Pay TV.
My mother would agree with you, Bob, but I figure that that’s because she can’t follow the plot when she keeps dropping off to sleep every minute or so, because she’s deaf, and because she can’t figure out the remote control on the latest generation of TV sets.

SBS has had a good run of science documetaries lately

Agree. Tonight on SBS we’ve had:
When we left Earth: the NASA missions 3:30-4:30
Bears of the Last frontier 4:30-5:30
I count nine different TV programs that I wouldn’t have minded watching tonight all between 4pm and 5 pm.
Followed up 6 to 7:45 by such classics as:
5th gear, Mythbusters (one I haven’t seen before), Friends, antiques roadshow, massive moves, big bang theory, MASH, Shaun the sheep, Spicks & Specks, News on 3, The Feed, Dark Science (on NITV), Sacred spaces (about architecture), vicar of dibley, Poirot, Auction hunters, Nature’s great events, Dr Who, Mr Stink (an excellent kids movie). I don’t expect you to like all of those, but I do.
All in all, there’s really a superb selection of non-crappy shows on free TV. Even for people (unlike me) who like the News.
