Help please. This computer came with Outlook. I don’t generally do any email from here (work) so I’m not very good with it. I want to stop it automatically downloading emails when I open the program. Where do I find the place to tell it only to download when I tell it to “send and receive”?

I’ll get back later.

What version of Outlook?

Open Outlook and go to Tools –> Options.

Click on Mail setup

Click on the Send/Receive button in the same tab, this will open a new options window. To disable automatic send/receive for your account group, select the group from the list and uncheck the box next to “Schedule an automatic send/receive every”.

Thanks poik. I’ll go there when I go offline. At the moment it starts downloading emails as soon as I open the program.

Why don’t you want it to automatically download emails?

I have never automatically downloaded them. For my buffy address, I check them at the server and ditch stuff I don’t want from there. Much quicker in the days of slow computers. Oh, that’s right….they are still slow!

If you had more than one email address, you should be given the choice of which one to download. However once you select one, they will immediate begin to download.

Right. I’ve just unticked everything there. Now to see if the thing still wants to do it’s own thing.

Whoops, did need one still ticked.

I think it will now do my bidding, and not what it wants to do.

I dont know if this will help

but you can set up rules

this allows you to put emails into specific folders

first create folders in the main inbox

family
friends
business
bank
ebay
paypal

etc

to create a rule right click on an email an select create rule

this will give you options of – from, subject, sent to,

you can select to bring up an alert window, play a sound, or move email into specific folders

you can set up a create rule to move on going annoying emails straight into the delete folder

or play a sound from a family member

I use rules all the time

Thanks crazy. I’ve learnt to live without saving emails very much. If it’s important, I print it off. This is pretty rare. My business is not online and has no email address. Pretty much all my emails are private and ephemeral. This computer at work therefore doesn’t need to store anything. But occasionally I do want to send an email, and I don’t then want the program downloading all the stuff I’ve left stored at the server. So it’s best to have it turned off as far as that goes and just send when I want to.

There are some emails stored on Mr buffy’s computer, which I should really go through and cull shortly.
