Subject: Windows 8.1 & Updates

Trying to adjust to Windows 8 after graduating from XP. Each evening at approx 12 an automatic update occurs. Is there a way to find out what this is, as I have only 1gb per month through provider Skymesh. Any help will be greatly appreciated. How people like me do miss Ilago.

While on the topic of Windows, I lost my desktop today and had to recover it by removing the “.bak” from regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft … ProfileList\….bak

I got my desktop back (eventually), but now the logon screen only shows the last accessed account, instead of all four accounts. What other things do I need to fix using regedit?

And how could this happen? AVG shows the machine clear of viruses.

None of the system backups recovered correctly.

Are you sure you only have 1Gb?
I am on Skymesh & have 1Gb normal & 2Gb off peak i.e. between 11pm & 1pm.

Yes. It’s a bit slow, 512/256, but only costs $29.95/month.

Yes but I’m waiting for NBN wifi which should be here in a few months.
When I first went to Skymesh it was the only non dialup service available & I got all the equipment free.

Why were you using regedit?

Because it worked on the same problem once before.

How else do you solve a problem where the registry is corrupted?

I have been well-and-truly hacked.
At the same time as my computer registry was changed, my phone number disappeared. Just now I find out from my ISP that people can’t ring me on landline because my phone number has been removed from a certain database. People do still ring me, and I pick up the phone, but hear nothing but static because no connection is made. I can’t ring out because there’s no dial tone.
