___
Compared to other diseases or other cancers, breast cancer receives a proportionately greater share of resources and attention. In 2001 MP Ian Gibson, chairman of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom all party group on cancer stated “The treatment has been skewed by the lobbying, there is no doubt about that. Breast cancer sufferers get better treatment in terms of bed spaces, facilities and doctors and nurses.” Breast cancer also receives significantly more media coverage than other, equally prevalent cancers, with a study by Prostate Coalition showing 2.6 breast cancer stories for each one covering cancer of the prostate. Ultimately there is a concern that favouring sufferers of breast cancer with disproportionate funding and research on their behalf may well be costing lives elsewhere. Partly because of its relatively high prevalence and long-term survival rates, research is biased towards breast cancer. Some subjects, such as cancer-related fatigue, have been studied little except in women with breast cancer.

One result of breast cancer’s high visibility is that statistical results can sometimes be misinterpreted, such as the claim that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lives—a claim that depends on the unrealistic assumption that no woman will die of any other disease before the age of 95. This obscures the reality, which is that about ten times as many women will die from heart disease or stroke than from breast cancer.

Breast cancer is one of the medical profession’s success stories – almost then only cancer-related one. World-wide incidences of recovery from cancers other than breast cancer have stagnated for the past 30 years. For example, early treatment does not result in an increased survival rate for lung cancer, so early detection of lung cancer is practically useless. Only breast cancer has a much better recovery rate now than it did 30 years ago. While it could be argued that perhaps the success of breast cancer treatment is largely an artefact of previously subclinical cases being observed – that’s a cynical attitude that is probably incorrect – surgery before metastasis is probably the correct reason.

In the light of breast cancer

And the surgery for Prostate cancer is far more invasive and costly than for breast cancer, breast cancer surgery is cosmetic, prostate cancer surgery is not cosmetic but functional and nasty shit.

The number of deaths was 21.4 per 100,000 men per year <-prostate

The number of deaths was 21.9 per 100,000 women per year <-breast

And No.

Fail bob.

Breast cancer is often diagnosed in younger women. Many of these women are in the best years of their lives and sometimes have young children of their own. These realities have allowed fund-raisers to market effectively, in a similar way to fund-raisers for children’s cancers.

Prostate cancer, on the other hand, is usually diagnosed in older males. Same for ovarian cancer in females, or Alzheimer’s, or heart disease. Unless someone has experienced the suffering themselves or has seen it in someone close to them, they are less likely to donate for these diseases than they are for breast cancer or children’s cancers.

The fund-raising success does not necessarily take away from other disease fund-raising. Instead of making donations to breast cancer research and/or children’s cancers, most people probably wouldn’t donate at all.

Various breast cancer charities have spent a lot of time and money raising awareness. It also helps when a young celebrity is diagnosed with breast cancer.

Generally speaking, men have a problem with having a finger stuck in their butt to check for prostate enlargement.

I thought this thread was about that ridiculous new trend of posting photos of a Coke can between one’s breasts in the name of breast cancer awareness.

You could have an amusing health campaign about prostate checks, showing doctors with massive hands, jokes about oh I lost my ring in there, fake sneezing fits

No, it’s because breasts are very pleasing aesthetically.
How many paintings by the great masters depict prostates? How many show boobs?

Exactly, aesthetics often have a ‘but’ or an ‘if’ attached

Women have specific organisations for womens health not sure if the same exists for men.
Men are probably more stubborn when it comes to going to the doctor when somethings appears wrong with their body functions.
Breast self examination is a lot easier than a self prostate examination and possibly a percentage of women go to the doctor for a lump that isn’t breast cancer and it costs money but whose going to blame them if they get it wrong.

There are men’s health organisations, as well as specific organisations for specific health concerns.
Yep. Men are less likely to seek medical attention. Plus I understand the symptoms (if any) for prostate cancer are quite vague.
Breast tissue gets all sorts of lumps and bumps (even in men). it’s much better to have a cyst than cancer.

There are a bunch of diseases, conditions and illnesses all crying for awareness and money for research. Right now there’s a push for ovarian cancer awareness since there’s no blood or other histology test and the symptoms are vague. Bowel cancer is also another one getting a lot of awareness… but sticking a Coke can up there to promote awareness is probably a bad idea.

What we need is a celebrity to get these cancers. No one knew anal cancer was a thing til Farrah Fawcett died from it.
