Whoops! Daffodils starting to poke up through the soil. Jonquils already making flower stalks. Apple tree part pruned, not all leave dropped on some of it yet (triple graft). I’ll get onto the peach and nectarine shortly. And lightly prune the baby plum.

Then I need to think about sorting out the fruit trees in Casterton, I guess.

More basil and coriander going in.

Pak choi looking good, being harvested along with cos lettuce and the occasional tomato. Fresh basil in last night’s pork sausage and fennel pasta was yummo.

Chiles are standing tall, potatoes are growing well, the little red variety plus a sweet potato.

The pawpaws are still producing heaps of tasty fruit, the soursops have stopped and the custaro apple has slowed down.

King Parrots where in the garden on the weekend along with a myriad of other birds in all shapes and sizes…

Ah for the tropics where tomatoes grow best in winter. :)
Longtime no see PM. :)

Down south it is more like onions and cabbages.

My broad beans are growing well, my peas are flowering. Have got chard and spinach coming out my ears but my self sown stuff has been devastated by happy families of fat crested pigeons. It is true that I’ve observed them detroying young seedlings by pecking at them for green pick and tugging them right out of the soil. Not a seed that falls escapes them.

And further South the broadbeans are just germinating. I have carrots moderately advanced, but not big enough to pull for babies yet. Sprouting broccoli mildly productive. And some Romanesco broccoli starting for form up. Cabbages also thinking about hearting……but not for a while. I do seem to have some onions this year, many of them selfseeded, so I don’t remember what they are. I just spread them out and let them grow. I may – or may not – finally get some Brussels sprouts. I’m very unsuccessful with them, but have plans to get some started in around August September and grow them in a protected position over Summer, with mosquito netting to keep out the bugs, and then hopefully next Winter they will do something for me.

In flower news, the first snowflakes are out, a few jonquils, and the daffodil leaves are heading up, although still only about a cm tall. Lacanalias also leafing up now. I need to get on to the rose pruning over the next couple of months.

But tomorrow will be a cooking day. Going to visit my parents in Melbourne on Sunday, so I need to cook and freeze food. Mum is still doing all the cooking, but it’s nice for her to have a break sometimes.
I did the biscuits last weekend. And some Bolognese sauce (already frozen). I’ll make some sausage rolls. And a couple of cakes.

What? How many hours do you imagine there are in a day?

Looks like it has been around for a while and hit by the slasher. Black Walnut shell.

Calendulas are one of my faves because there are always flowers.

I remember when I was young.. The consecutive frosts were at least 30 or more.

Without an electric blankey, slipping into cotton sheets can feel a bit like this at first.
