The Lyrebird

This is interesting on many levels. It is surprising that it has the capacity to produce such broad spectrum sounds.

Glad it wasn’t just me. I received a strange message from my anti-virus software earlier this morning and was getting worried.

Without looking at the link, is that the one that has the lyrebird practicing the flute?

I like the one that does chainsaw impersonations.

I wonder if they learn the sounds new or can pass it on to the next generation

Ah, my dear friends the lyrebirds. We were lucky to have them in the bush behind our place in Wentworth Falls. I remember many wacky episodes with them. Especially the one where I stalked one around the outside of our house and it kept taunting me with songs.

Audio clip #4: Two flute phrases and mimicry of birdsong from a “flute lyrebird” recorded near the original Allan’s Water homestead at 3 p.m. on 30 June 2010 by Carol Probets.

Anyway, how do we know they are chainsaws? They could be motorbikes.

Then there was the time when I had the opportunity to take a photo like this:

Except I was holding on to two small trees to stop myself from sliding off the rocks down a steep fall, my Pentax K1000 dangling from my neck and I couldn’t raise the camera to take the photo.

The lyrebird stood in a patch of sunlight over yonder and shimmered his feathers and mocked me.

(I have many stories of the adventures in our backyard with the lyrebirds.)

Speaking of hammers, there are good recordings of lyrebirds hammering nails and hand sawing timber.

Ah, the male satin bower bird. Those colours!!! We also had those in our “backyard” at Wentworth Falls. Gee, I miss that backyard….bush leading down to a nature reserve.

We were really fortunate to have such a wide variety of creatures right on our doorstep. The bower birds would sit on the verandah railing (along with many other birds) and I could watch them from the computer chair. I never found a bower in all my walks through the bush behind our place.

I’ve found and photographed the ever moving bower of a lone male spotted bowerbird. I never found a female or the nest. :(
