I’ve said it before, for answers to moral or ethical questions start with Jeremy Bentham. From there we can progress to John Stuart Mill, but Mill’s approach lacked some of Bentham’s genius.

I like to think in terms of “Quality of Life”. The best approach is that which causes the greatest worldwide improvement in quality of life. Quality of life for humans is the first desiderata, then quality of life for animals in general and intelligent animals in particular.
