In WA the prison officers asked it to be banned for their own health I think and perhaps its causing lots of problems with scabbing smokes and associated agro when refused.

it’s going to skyrocket the price of tobacco in prison.. it’ll be worth more than marijuana… they’ll still get it in

being in gaol is

1 a punishment

2 keeping serious offenders out of society

if you cant get smokes that’s all part of the deal of being in prison – I take it the prison riot recently was about the smokes being revoked?

Problems though:

a) Prison is likely to be a particularly stressful environment, certainly not the best place to have to give up smoking
b) Prisons often contain a lot of violent offenders who react aggressively to stress
c) Since they’re not having much luck keeping hard drugs out of prisons, the tobacco ban will probably fail anyway, but lead to more conflict and tension

those people are always going to be aggressive – that’s why they are in prison in the first place , they couldn’t keep their fists from peoples faces or their hands off other people

tobacco or no tobacco they are going to be like that anyway – just put the violent aggressive prisons in their own wing and let them get on with it

ok i’m sure they are very nice people that for what ever reason the hand of fate has guided them behind bars

that martial arts bloke that killed some one out on his birthday – terrible mistake obviously, he’s a very nice bloke in real life (unless you get punched in the face in which case you could die). I hate it when people generalise too

In abstract I’d be happy if they just banned smoking altogether, but I realise there are political and philosophical arguments against this.

Prisoners are in different situation from most people in that their entire lives are both public and “at home”.

The Correctional Officers must be hating the ban , it will increase aggro and their work.
That’s why grog is such a big no no in jail but not so much dope as one mellows but the other can aggro.
Another hidden agenda would be eliminating a currency .
