Interesting, but basically simple, idea. Their glasses filter the centre of the red-green receptor overlap in order to heighten the difference between reds and greens, thus aiding people who suffer from red-green colourblindness.

I wonder whether they’ll make any difference for res/green colourblind adults. Their brains haven’t developed the ability to distinguish colour differences, so, while these specs might add a dimension to their vision, I can’t see them doing much else.

The user videos show RGCBA responding well to these glasses.

Every time I see those ‘for the first time’ videos, be it seeing, hearing or improved something, I think of that photo of that young boy getting his first hearing aid…. The look on his face sums it up for me.
This is good stuff.. I wonder if traditionally colour blind biased jobs will become available now…

Yes. Bradford went blind at 10 months, and regained full vision at 50 years. His case illustrates the difficulty of learning to interpret a sense after adulthood. RGCB adults can see, and can interpret what they see, but they’ve never learned to interpret the information in the res+green spectrum.
As I said, I’m happy to be wrong.

“I have a theory which is mine”.
I found out at an early age that I was red/green colour blind, thanks to an Ishihara colour blindness test, (the one with the coloured dots) this pissed me off no end cos I wanted to be an RAAF pilot, and at that time this stopped me, I don’t know if this is still the case. What I still don’t know is what does being red/green colour blind mean? you can point at an object, and both I and another person who is not R/G colour blind will agree that it is red or green, so do I see grass the same way as a non RG colour blind person sees blood and vice versa?

Obv question: if you are able to tell red from green then why did you fail the test?

I wish some optometrist had told me forty years ago that what I needed for RG colour blindness was rose-coloured glasses. They would really have helped. You can’t get them these days.
PS. the xkcd survey on perceived colour http://blog.xkcd.com/2010/05/03/color-survey-results/
also included the effects of RG colour blindness even though that’s not on the blog. I asked the author about it

The answer is not obvious. Red is not obvious particularly when surrounded by a lot of green. Red doesn’t stand out, as others say it does for them. When red is mixed with blue, I initially see just blue, until told the colour is purple, then I see purple. When green is mixed with yellow, I see yellow, until corrected.
By way of examples:
If you asked me to turn my back, then threw a cricket ball onto the outfield behind me, I’d be unlikely to find it quickly – usually not at all – when I turned around. If you pointed in the general direction, I’d likely see it quickly, and see it as red.
The ball coming at me when I’m batting, appears about 2 or 3 metres in front of me. Consequently I am hopeless at cricket.

Another example:
I often don’t see red blossoms until someone says “Aren’t those flowers magnificent?” and points at the tree.

I’ll quickly throw in a caveat on that: Except if they selected Alex, then I’d suggest that the selectors have gone off their cruet and needed urgent psychiatric treatment.

Look, it’s not going to happen, ‘sif the selectors would go down the road of selecting someone with a surname like Kasprowicz or any of those wog sounding names. There’s be conniptions in the press box for starters.

The highlight came on Day 4 of my tests, when my kids discovered a rainbow arcing across the sky, pointing and exclaiming. I looked. With my own eyes, I could barely see it. Maybe there was a soft arc of yellow, but that was it.
Then I put on the glasses. Unbelievable! Now I saw two entire additional color bands, above and below the yellow arc. It was suddenly a complete rainbow. I don’t mind admitting, I felt a surge of emotion. It was like a peek into a world I knew existed, but had never been allowed to see.
