Subject: Scientists are building a system that could turn atmospheric CO2 into fuel

Scientists in Canada are developing an industrial carbon dioxide recycling plant that could one day suck CO2 out of the atmosphere and convert it into a zero-carbon e-diesel fuel. Developed by tech start-up Carbon Engineering and partly funded by Bill Gates, the system will essentially do the job of trees, but in places unable to host them, such as icy plains and deserts.

FWIW that process (I think, I haven’t read the linked article) has been around for many years.
A good thing to do though.

Yeah, it is weird that every time something like this is reported, the headline and intro present it as a brand new thing.

The technology described in the article is nothing new but hopefully there have been improvements in efficiency.

So when this is up and running and we use it to control the temperature and tell nature to GAGF and that we’re running things here now who is going to decide what temperature to set the world at?
There’s going to be shit fights, there’s going to be fights over the remote.

Fair point, some supervillain could use this to suck us back into the ice age.

Then you’ll have all the greenies complaining that there isn’t enough CO2 in the atmosphere to feed the forests and they’ll be campaigning for more coal mines…

(TIC) Useful for getting fuel for nuclear fusion using the CNO cycle.

(TIC) Wouldn’t it be easier to just burn carbon-containing substances (such as underground shale oil) to get the carbon dioxide to make fuel? Or heat limestone to drive off carbon dioxide to make fuel?
