If were to make unfounded defamatory assertions about somebody on this forum, would it be slander or libel?

libel i’d expect – depending of what and how you’re coming at it, but whatever may need to be tested, and if it were established that whatever were substantially true then it may come to nothing. Opportunity (in the context of a possible action) maybe sought to right the situation by way of an apology involving some detail of the wrong.

Libel is the written word.

Yes.

It is still defamation of character.

The good thing about social media is that people do a pretty goof job of defaming themselves.

Slander is the spoken word, libel is written or pictures or print. Defamation is the generic word that covers both.

Some jurisdictions differentiate between libel and slander, with libel being the more serious. Some just use the term defamation to cover both. Further complicating matters is that some jurisdictions have replaced the common law with legislation, which may use different words again.

But we live in an age of rampant celebrity association, such that it seems anyone, whether they have a reputation to protect, or a public image that might be harmed, seems to consider themselves eligible for what little legal protections writs of ‘Defamation’ might offer.
