Interesting statistical breakdown of deaths by natural causes in the USA by Mona Chalabi.

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-does-it-mean-to-die-of-natural-causes/

It sometimes strikes me as odd that dying of death due to accidental contact with a chemical agent is considered non-natural, and death due to accidental contact with a biological agent such as a bacterium is considered natural.

I suppose natural causes is an improvement over supernatural causes.

Or un-natural causes?

Quite surprised that accidental poisoning is more lethal than motor vehicle accidents in the non natural category. Is it overdose on docs drugs or something else?

It does surprise me that accidental poisoning leads the non-natural death ladder. In front of vehicle accidents.

That’s strange. I thought “killed by hospitals” would be higher on the list.

I note that that’s only US figures. World figures that I looked up a couple of years ago were quite different. Let’s see if I can still find them.

First let’s look at Australia. In order (not normalised to 100%).
Heart disease 225
Stroke 110
Alzheimer 85
Lung cancer 80
Pneumonia 60
Diabetes 45
Colon cancer 40
Kidney 30

Not the same as the USA. eg in USA heart disease is 5 times as common as stoke, as against 2 times in Australia. In the USA pneumonia kills more than stroke and Alzheimer. Hmm. Statistics unreliable?

World causes of death (again not scaled to 100%) http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs310/en/

Heart disease 74
Stroke 67
COPD 31
Pneumonia 31
Lung cancer 16
HIV 15
Diarrhea 15
Diabetes 15
Roadkill 13

where COPD = emphysema + bronchitis + asthma

Difficult to make meaningful comparison between Australia and the US because of the huge differences between the availability of medical care and the regulatory environment.

I don’t think we have anything to learn from the US.

That would be learning from their mistakes. I would much rather learn from their successes.

The most recent full report is from 2004. I thought it was supposed to be annual.
http://www.who.int/healthinfo/global_burden_disease/GBD_report_2004update_full.pdf?ua=1

The bit which interests me most is transmissible diseases.

But also see neonatal deaths. Pneumonia tops the list.

The most common disabilities. Depression tops the list

Leading causes of death.

Incidence of disease. Diarrhoea followed by Pneumonia then Malaria.

then they need to make clearer distinctions between man made and natural

yes it is a bit odd

The natural, man made distinction is a bit bogus anyway.
