Let’s see if I can open another can of worms here to rival the orange-in-the-dark epic saga.

After my ex has claimed my Canon EOS 600D, 55mm & 200mm & 300mm lenses, and macro tubes, I’m needing to get a new one. Might as well upgrade to something a bit better than what I had.

So which is better? Canon or Nikon?

:)

Want a can opener?

In their pre-digital day, I would have said Nikon. Canon however have led the way with digital. I still prefer Nikon but I’ve used Nikon for 35 years. I used to fix cameras and I’d have put money on Voightlander or Leica, Minolta before Nikon or Canon.

Nikon D7200 is the exact one that was recommended to me in store today… or the Canon 7D.

Six one way, half a dozen the other.

What’s better, Ford or Holden, Makita or DeWalt, Samsung or Apple, Abu Garcia or Okuma?

They’re both make excellent cameras. When I bought Mrs T’s D600, it beat the equivalent Nikon by more than $100. That was the decider for me.

That’s what I was told today. Difference between Canon/Nikon is the same argument as Ford/Holden.

Get a mirror-less unless you have a reason to go full frame.

Full frame would be nice, but I don’t have a real need for it.

Mirrorless is the way to go then IMO. Much more portable and you always end up shooting with the camera you have with you.

I don’t. I’m not looking to buy something today. Just looking to see what’s available, and as soon as finances permit, I’ll buy or layby one. But not quite yet.

Still good to get information on what’s available though.

Buy whichever one you can pick up and use without thinking about it .

If you’re used to Canon I suspect you’ll find them easier to use.

The old adage of,
Do I want it? If so, why? Do I need it? If so why? Can I afford it? If so, how?

does come first. If No then don’t buy it.

Next comes; Will it fit my requirements. Do I like the feel of it etc.

Personally unless the design is clunky and it doesn’t fit your hand and usage requirements, they are all good. Similar to a car. If it works and is registerable, has four wheels. It is as good as any other car.

So whether you have been used to using a certain brand or not, should not necessarily be applicable because you are looking to buy a new camera. You don’t have/want the old one or you would have no need to be buying a new one.

If you just want to take happy snaps and video then a mirrorless is probably the way to go. They are lighter to carry around and usually do better at video.

If you want to use a variety of lenses and other groovy accessories then you would probably want a DSLR.

Canon or Nikon? That choice is subjective. Think about what sort of photography you are most likely going to be using it for. Try out a few different models. Price can also be a big consideration.
