hey there’s no town in ‘old rabaul town’ !
the colour of rapopo sunset is unbelievabel.
great shot – ’2 boys and takeaway’

your photos are getting even better PM. you’ve successfully captured “the moment” in each photo. well done.
thanks pepe and aquarium, there’s some new shots up on the ol’ Flickr this morning. Many of them of the wildlife and scenes from Bensbach, Western Province. Unlike the rest of PNG, the bottom of the Western Province is flat.

i feel liike a goose commenting on your artistry but here goes
- the misty morning is sheer serenity
- the pending rain gives the 2 ducks photo a sense of anticipation
- is the small bird a dotterel ? what is the biggest tree in the west?
and btw what were you doing in old rabaul – isn’t that on an island?
fantastic fotografy as always – great.

you’re never a goose, I appreciate your comments :)
I’m thinking the small bird maybe a Stint… and I ain’t sure what the big tree was and yes Rabaul is on the Island of New Britain, and I was there on a photographic holiday with a good Aussie mate of mine, in just over a week, we visited the Wetlands of the West, a Volcano in the East and the festivity which is the Goroka Show up in the Highlands…
good fun :)
Here is a Taro patch in the Western Province. I particularly liked the way they mulched the Taro beds, well done I thought…

and here’s a more mature crop of the same.

Have a look at this Gumnutty kinda thingo!

a purple flower I used to call a Tibouchina, but I believe I maybe wrong :(

and a very popular little rock rose which appears all over PNG.

and a Big Hibiscus :)

and a butterfly sucking the guts out of a Hibiscus…

“and see if you can spot the Katydid?”
Oh awesome :)

I don’t think so pepe, come to think of it, I ain’t sure where they originate from… might have to go read a book…
perhaps I should have read the rest of the thread…. My knowledge is that they are sometimes called the Gallipoli rose…
OK, sit back and enjoy a few happy snaps from the UPNG (University of Papua New Guinea) Independence Day Celebrations as PNG turned 33 years old. These Uni students had a blast as one Sing-sing group from every Province performed for the public’s joy. Quite a crowd turned out to enjoy the day… I was even asked to join in the traditional dance by a group from Morobe but I declined (I wasn’t dressed for the part).
Fantastic fun and some real gorgeous people performed and the energy was contagious…
First up a bloke from the Highlands who was struggling to keep his headdress in place…. me thinks.

next, a chap in reflective mode from the Sepik.

here’s a chap who is not in reflective mode…

and a young fella, not quite at Uni at this stage but maybe his older sister is???

I think you can call him whatever really, he’s proud of his culture… just don’t let him too close to your Chook run?
Here’s another reflective guy from Chimbu me thinks…

this West Papuan crew were really getting into the swing of things…

two gorgeous girls from West Papua.

and three good looking lads from West Papua…

Motuan Kekeni na animase!

a few cowrie shells there too by the looks of it. are they still considered legitimate currency?
Wow PM these are stunning pics :)
How good would it be to witness something like that hey.
and what celebration isn’t complete with someone chewing way too much Betelnut!

And lastly, when you go shopping on Independence Day, all the staff dress up in Traditional attire… It can make it interesting in the butcher section when asking for Breast meat or Thighs…. or Sausages…. ahem.

really only on the Islands BG, but the banks in Rabaul will still take Kina shells. And at Bride Price ceremonies, shell money is still valid.

It is great fun to be part of it, I have some great shots of me being swamped by the young boys and girls from the sing-sing groups just wanting to be part of the photos. They’re gonna be awesome shots in my PNG photo album.
Even just being there, I ended up at the end of the day covered with clay, paint and charcoal from trying to not end up just another rubber necker with a camera…

traditionally, seeds from Bixa orellana would often dye faces and feathers and Mango leaves can turn some things yellow…. but this is just a guess… I might have to ask a few of my Motuan friends.

I have made 50 year old ladies giggle like school girls by asking them the stories behind some of their traditional tattoos, the closer the tattoo makes it to the nether regions the stories get a little risque… and who am I not to ask.
pm says innocently enough…

My 2 fav photos.
photos dont seem to be working for me.
does this one work
a chilly good morning here
- i fed the chooks and watered the onion seedlings i had planted out last night – then walked back inside and the house was distinctly warmer than the morning air.
bird life is increasing here as spring progresses – first the boobook owls arrive and this morning i heard a shrike thrush.
