Not the first, it’s already been shown that spiral galaxies transform into barred spiral galaxies and back again. And it’s already been shown that irregular galaxies merge to form elliptical or spiral galaxies.

But this is the first time I’ve seen claims that spiral galaxies become elliptical galaxies.
