a little bit of fish offal certainly attracts them.

Due to the elf breaking my glass jug I use for making bread…. we needed to go to the stupidmarket. Want bread for tomorrow and it’ll cook in the early hours of the morning.

Anyway they had fly trap baits there for $2.99…………. so I bought some. All set to go and kill some flies. Also bought more sticky fly strips for the chook house & duck shed….

I have one of those fly traps out near the duck pen, and I use the sticky ones inside the house. Getting lots of those “hover flies” atm.

I hang one inside our house last summer at the height of the flies. Bimbo hated it.

the coming of the insects also brings others -
- two huntsmen spiders are feeding on the verandah this hot night.
- i sat on the verandah as the sun rose this morning, and two roosters (one being our Aspro) competed with a song bird for air time. then a boobook owl chimed in and did its solo.
nice.

my ducks have a good go at the flies, and catch some too. the ducks must really have it in for them as they do a short hiss before attacking. now that the duck run contains a lot of sand, their poo usually dries up fairly quick (within a day) so there’s not much flies there. the rabbit though makes so many pellets per day that flies are hanging around in the cage big time.
just remember that only a small proportion of all flies are prone to spreading disease and being a nuisance getting in the house. most of the colorful flies and also those flies with a thin body with white flecks/stripes are good guys, and i’ve never had one in the house.
i do believe that they’ll go for vegemite in water…but it stinks.

I concur with the vegemite, although I think if you use a sachet of yeast in some water, it will act as a bait for the flies too…
