Astrophysicist find supermassive black holes in quasar nearest Earth

Astrophysicists have found two supermassive black holes in Markarian 231, the nearest quasar to Earth. The discovery of two supermassive black holes — one larger one and a second, smaller one — are evidence of a binary black hole and suggests that supermassive black holes assemble their masses through violent mergers.

Nearest?

Let’s see. “Markarian 231 (UGC 8058) is a Type-1 Seyfert galaxy that was discovered in 1969. It is located about 600 Million light years away from Earth.”

“Hanny’s Voorwerp has the adjacent galaxy IC 2497, which is about 650 million light-years away.”

“3C273 is the brightest quasar in the sky and one of the closest, about 2400 million light years away.”

“Cygnus A is the second strongest radio source in the sky, and was found by Hubble to contain a hidden quasar. It is 600 Million light years away”.

So Markarian 231 really could be the nearest quasar.
