Does anyone know when almonds are ready to pick?
I’m worried the birds will get to them before I do.

Hi muschee – mine look pretty good at the moment too. Ever since I moved here the birds have got them before me.
Luckily I got this WA info from a friend yesterday – my “fruit, nut and vine ripening chart” says Almonds are mid-Jan to end of April. I’m not sure I trust it though as they look so well developed now! What will they be doing until Jan??
I should net mine but they’re so close up to the fence that it would be a bit tricky to make a proper frame..

Hi Bon,
Now this is why I asked, cause they do look so good now and the longer on the tree the more likely our feathered friends will be enjoying them. I don’t have many anyway, so I might just pick one and see what it’s like.
Will let you know.

Sounds like a plan! I’ve heard contradicting things about when to pick them – one said you should wait until they split, the other that you wait until you can shake them off the tree. I suspect I’ll never get to eat mine unless I net the plants though.
Do you have two trees? I have two, and I get a pretty big crop.
My almonds were ripe for the picking…. 3 packets for $10.00 at the stupidmarket;P

I do, but they’re really far apart from eachother, if that makes a difference?
I have never had much off either in 6 years. They were already here and probably get a bit neglected.

Hmm… mine are pretty much the most low maintenance thing in the garden. I never water, fertilise, or prune them, and they still come up good. BUT I have only been here 2 years – they might still be benefitting from the care of the previous owner? (I kinda doubt that, as the previous owners didn’t seem to do much for the citrus)
I think mine just do so well as they’re really well established. They are right next to each other – maybe that helps? I don’t really know..

the almonds here north of adelaide are formed but have a new, thick green shells. the shell has to fill out and dry – a couple of months yet – but you’re right about the birds – they eat them green.

Ahhh, that explains it!
as pep says they need to dry and open up …usually late Dec-early January here in upper SA
re pollination as long as there is a another tree in the area (1km roughly) it will cross pollinate.
