Subject: Win 10 Update problems.

For those who have or haven’t I’ll share my experiences.

I held off until I installed my new SSD drive (another story).

First attempt took that long, I went for a haircut and came back to an error code and revert to Win 7.

So, I try again. Taking so long I go to the pub for a beer or two. Come home to the same result.

A Google of the error codes seems to give the result: Oh you’ve got that too?

The Win 7 revert lost all my settings, that I couldn’t get back. Some websites (like this one) had about 20pt font, others (facebook) had less than 6pt.

No wukkas, I’ll do a restore. No you wont, the attempted upgrade has wiped out my restore points, thanks Bill…not.

OK Win 7 reinstall from my disc.

Nope, your version is newer than on the disc.

Ok new install and wipe my files……………..grrr.

All good until I go to outlook for emails (my browsers have had an IE base), nope you need IE11 for this application.

No wukkas, download IE11. Nope you need SP1 for this app. Download SP1….whatever MS gave me it wasn’t SP1.

In the meantime my ISP has shaped me for excess data (I’m unlimited, but it doesn’t really mean that).

I’m currently using Chrome which has it’s faults, and I’m looking forward not to many happy hours of file retrievable.

Beware of Greeks bearing gifts.

I tried to do service pack upgrades on win 7 (premium think it is), so could go to later version of IE and Media Player, tried four times but would roll it back, then I found something that might force it, sort of had its own loader (prepared it for the service pack then loaded), which worked except it wiped something that stopped my wireless internet stick from working (I couldnt fix that).

Anyway I did all this twice, along the way only bothered to save my important stuff, which fortunately was easy enough as HP have good options for system and file recovery or clean install.

In the end I stayed with keep it simple stupid, stayed with the old.

I’ve stayed with XP. Seems to work fine almost all the time.

We would have stayed with XP too, if we could have. It was not available as an OEM package when we upgraded our Dells, so we went with Win7 (as Win8 was still a bit too new at the time). I have heard very little positive feedback about Win10.

I like Win10 and have had no problems with it besides me taking a while to work out a couple of features.

I’m guessing I need to buy a new computer to install it. And I like the one I’ve got. It’s a netbook, which they no longer make, and have replaced with tablets.

I runs my early MapInfo (tablets won’t) and does spreadsheets, word processing etc without hassle. A few years back, I ran an entire major drill-out program (100 people, producing around 50Gb of scanned data per day which I had to process and send off, and receive back the entered data) on it. And it’s light. As in lightweight.

I have Win8 configured to my satisfaction and will probably stay with this until the next machine.

I downloaded Win 10 three times and on each occasion it would not install. In total it cost me around $100 for all downloads with nothing to show for it, so shall not bother again.

I find its better doing a clean install from a full version

then copy your files over

Beware of Geeks bearing gifts.

Upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
Upgrade was completely painless, apart from need to restore the Windows 7 calculator and Windows 7 games from files on the web.
Bootup in Windows 10 became very fast, document search was superb.

A few days later, Windows 10 went into infinite restart loops, after three days of infinite restart loops I went back to Windows 7 out of Windows 10 safe mode.
Uninstall of Windows 10 back to Windows 7 was completely painless, I used the method in http://www.howtogeek.com/220723/how-to-uninstall-windows-10-and-downgrade-to-windows-7-or-8.1/

Using msconfig I disabled all programs that run at startup.
Also, a brand new patch to Windows 7 catches and bypasses cursor freeze bugs.
Together, the two above changes to Windows 7 have reduced my computer crashes from 3 per day to 1 per day.

For more, see my earlier thread on Windows 10 update, http://tokyo3.org/forums/holiday/topics/6462/

I’ve concluded, based on what I read on the web, that Windows 10 was initially a great operating system, that was ruined by the shits who produce “Windows Updates”. If every single person who produces Windows Updates was sacked, Microsoft would have a much better product.

I don’t know really. My SiL was having problems with her comp running WIN 8 so she bought a new box I asked if she installed WIN 10 and she said that she’d installed WIN 7 instead.

Somehow I installed Windows 9, I don’t know how that happened.

Me.

Whatever works is always good enough.

Doubt I’ve ever had a computer that had the latest operating system on it. As far as my minimal experience goes, XP works fine as long as you avoid all the malware sites and such.

Who would want to win 10 update problems? I’m not even going to enter the draw. Someone else can win them.
