If you can understand American football (grid iron) then you proly can understand their politics too, I don’t feel deprived that I don’t understand either.

Neither is particularly hard to understand, they both just take a long time to play out…

OK, let me rephrase that, I don’t know why they bother with either then.

American football is easy to understand. Only took me one or two games to pick up the basics.

From what I’ve seen, p_p, it’s like rugby; is that true?

Not really. You get 4 tackles to move the ball 10 yards, If you get the 10 yards the counter resets and you get another “1st & 10”, and so on till you either score a touch-down or you get tackled the 4th time, or you kick the ball down the field as far as you can, or you attempt a field-goal. With each tackle the ball is reset at the yardage mark where the tackle was made. Teams can either run or pass (throw) the ball forward to gain their 10 yards.

Like I said makes as much “sense” as their politics.

Basically you play for 30 seconds and take a 10 minute break.

Yes, they are almost identical.

Face your opponent in an ugly, square-on stance and proceed to kick the balls of same repeatedly.

I don’t believe in if anymore.

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;

If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

The film If is famous for having full frontal views of a woman’s naughty bits, and also the brother of one of my class mates had a bit part.

I have it on DVD but haven’t seen all of it. It’s rather nasty with little in the way of redeeming qualities.

Not how I remember it, but I only watched it once, and it was 47 years ago, so I may be misremembering.

I was wanting a tinker the other day. Loose handle on a saucepan and no way of tightening it.

But you never get a tinker knocking on your door these days.

In fact I’ve never had a tinker knocking on my door, ever.
