Massive solar power investment could see up to 10 power plants built in Australia

Two of the nation’s renewable energy agencies are planning a massive investment in solar power which could see the construction of up to 10 large-scale power plants.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) announced a combined $350 million investment.

imagine if they spent the 93 billion dollars earmarked for NBN and put it into renewable energy

“We’re talking anywhere from five megawatts and upwards,” Mr Frischknecht said.

Given that a coal fired power station is several hundred megawatts, I think they’re being a bit loose by describing it as large scale solar.

if you could have limitless cheap electrical power manufacturing would return to the country and many other energy hungry processes would be viable

it’s too late now because there’s nothing left in the tank

it was squandered years ago by Rudd when they started doling out money for nothing

if you have to inject money into the economy the worse thing you can do is simply hand money out

at the time I was pointing out on the SSSF that renewable energy production could be built with this money instead of buying hundreds of thousands of televisions that are mostly in the rubbish tip

if they had spent this money on renewable power then Australia would have the cheapest power in the world and virtually no one would have solar panels on their roof , it wouldn’t be viable as power would be so cheap

All of these solar power stations starting around 5 megawatts can be scaled upwards to a hundred

For that matter a single wind turbine could be 7 MW.

Then again he does say “and upwards” but it would be good if he gave some indication of the expected max.

And given the scale of what needs to be done, I really don’t think $350 million should be described as a massive investment.

Its more like a seed investment

More to the point: the fact that this is considered a massive investment compared to current levels shows how paltry investment in solar has been hitherto.

I don’t believe it can be called an investment when the investors are using tax payers money

Didn’t they use tax payers money to build the coal fired power stations which are now fully paid for and are near end of life

you’ll find these coal fired stations still receive subsidies from the government , as I saw it when I worked at one ( now closed) , the gov had to give them free money or the power station would have shut years ago

rather than spend any more money propping up coal fired power stations we should spend it on renewable energy

we should leave one coal fired station open as curiosity rather like steam powered trains , the complexity of these places needs to be seen for people in the future to realise how complicated it was for us to make electrical power

Coal is renewable, give or take billions of years.

it’s very wasteful using coal to produce heat

it could be used to make plastics
