Sounds of science: The radio magnetar, a pulsar that broke the rules
In amongst that static you can hear a very sci-fi sounding swooshing noise every five and a half seconds.
It is actually the sound of a new kind of pulsar — a radio magnetar — that was discovered at “The Dish” radio telescope in Parkes in 2006.

Note that this connects in to Topic 4 of my “Astronomy Topics”.
Many neutron stars/pulsars/magnetars are known to be active in radio and/or X-rays with or without gamma rays. So far, nobody knows why any particular neutron star chooses to be active in any particular wavelength. In Topic 4 I’m reporting on newly discovered neutron stars/pulsars/magnetars that are active in gamma rays but not in either radio or X-rays.
