Subject: Neurofeedback

Has anyone here heard of or had experience with neurofeedback? I’ve been doing it on-and-off since mid last year and wondering if it’s as effective as is being suggested to me.

YouTube: what is neurofeedback? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6XeCwFQrCA

From Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurofeedback):

Neurofeedback (NFB), also called neurotherapy or neurobiofeedback, is a type of biofeedback that uses real-time displays of brain activity—most commonly electroencephalography (EEG), to teach self-regulation of brain function. Typically, sensors are placed on the scalp to measure activity, with measurements displayed using video displays or sound.

Definition:
Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback that measures brain waves to produce a signal that can be used as feedback to teach self-regulation of brain function. Neurofeedback is commonly provided using video or sound, with positive feedback for desired brain activity and negative feedback for brain activity that is undesirable. Related technologies include hemoencephalography biofeedback (HEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) biofeedback.

I have felt occasional positive feelings from it. I remember last year feelings of intense elation after my weekly 1hr sessions.

But at the moment I’m specifically attempting to sort out issues with ‘brain fog’. According to the EEG, my left pre-frontal cortex constantly has a low hi-beta level and a high theta level, which suggests the area of the brain that controls thought processes, mental functioning, learning and concentration, is effectively in a state of sleep, hence the issue with ‘brain fog’.

Since starting sessions again about 5 weeks ago, the EEG now shows the hi-beta level higher and the theta level lower, when measuring the left pre-frontal cortex. The fog hasn’t cleared yet, but it’s ever-so-slightly better than it was.

Just wondering if it’s an effective treatment? If it’s simply placebo, then I really don’t care. If it has some positive effect, then placebo me up, baby.

I know next to nothing. It made a recent appearance on the TV series “Todd Sampson – Redesign my brain” where it helped with relaxation and tolerance to pain.

Dr Phil has a 44min vid on YouTube about it, but I’m supposed to be doing job applications at the moment so I haven’t had time to check it out.

There seems to be plenty on youtube to support it. But then, there’s also plenty on youtube to support homeopathy. So I’m still unsure if neurofeedback is actually doing anything or not.

You managed to watch a whole episode? I don’t like Todd Sampson enough to even start watching that series.

No, and yes. Couldn’t stand it on TV, switched off instantly.
but …
Later got the whole mini-series on DVD from the Library. It is very watch-able on DVD, best science DVD for a long time. Worth buying. So he’s a wanker, but he’s also very significantly smarter than Brian Cox, Dr Karl, and more than a few other science presenters I could name.

he is not a scientist by any stretch of the imagination. He is a TV personality and an advertising agency guru. He studied biology and economics.. at best he is a ‘environmentalist” (he had some stuff to do with initiating earth hour) or more like a conscientious citizen for the environment.

yaha… so I wouldn’t be too hard on him. He’s a modern presenter a brilliant self promoter, and savvy businessman, but not any more a scientist than I am.

the other day I heard someone quote Dr Karl as a ref for real science (Dr Karl said it so it must be true) I told them that as much as I like and admire Dr Karl, he should not be used as a reference.

Smarter than Brian Cox, I will dispute.

Never seen Todd Sampson, but I quite like Brian Cox. Can’t recall him saying anything silly.
