Tomorrow I want to sow some bush beans and butter beans. Just humming and harring whether to sow direct into a prepared area or into seedling trays.

Just wondering…how do you sow your beans????

I am leaning towards soil right off, to save double work.

I have 2 areas where I can pop the beans…need to tidy up the areas though.
1 where the carrots were and the other near the spring onions.

Going to be a good day for gardening tomorrow.

Into the soil it is.

I’m shelling broad beans at the mo…… next season I’m going to sow twice the amount….I’m in lurv with them.

Busted the elf eating the pods while watching the ducks, before I shooed him away and brought the basket inside.,

elves are good foragers – he ate a mini carrot whilst he was here. LOL
my bb’s are just about done. carrots and peas moving into full production.
lousy outdoor day today – strawbs, peas, corn and other crops a bit wilted – hopefully rain and irrigation tomorrow will fix.

Yes a few of the top of my BB were burnt. Rhubarb survived:D

Going to give my garden a tidy up and a power feed tomorrow. Tonight I was able to water the vegie patch and so the power feed will do them a power of good.

Also the tommies need to be tied up more.

I planted my beans directly. Now that the soil is nice and warm I’m planting everything directly. I will sow my beetroot in pots to start with though, ‘cause it needs separating.

What reasons do you plant things in pots first? I did it in winter, but figured it was to ensure they had a chance with the colder soil.

Why else?

Yeah that is what I usually do too Sue. I have a mini hot house I use to start them off in. Just wondering what folks do with their bean seeds. Just plain good old wondering…..:)

that’s the main reason – to plant early and extend the growing season.
with onions – its because they are impossible to weed – so i plant seedlings.

I’m getting some free red onions through diggers and they’ll be started off in seedling trays.

i have onions from direct sowing. they’re still quite small (no bulb yet.) had to do plenty of weeding, as it was a newly converted from lawn vegie patch. if you weed just after watering thoroughly, the weeds come out with their roots fairly easily, without disturbing the soil much.
the onions were taking so long to come up that i inter-sowed with carrots. now both are growing.
we’ll see how the onions turn out.

about growing seeds in pots: it provides a more controlled environment. you can more easily (than direct sown) provide better temperature, watering, weeding, and keep pests away. my favorite thing about it though is that you can start off the plants whilst the garden bed is still growing other crops. so not only do you extend the season but also can grow more crops. some people buy seedlings to save time. i prefer growing from seed.

Hi Lucky,
usual brown, and some white onion from the Zorzi seed packet. i think i did a row of shallots as well for good measure. they’re all looking exactly the same at the moment.

I hadn’t considered that angle. For someone like me with a very small patch it’s a good tip. Now, I just have to work on knowing how long things take to grow!
