Hot Jupiter planet discovery sheds new light on planet formation and migration

Researchers at University of Michigan have discovered that a hot Jupiter system has two close-in planetary companion – a first of its kind finding till date.

Hot Jupiters are those large and gaseous planets (like Jupiter) that are unusually close to their host star. Large gaseous planets are believed to be formed in frigid temperatures. In our solar system that means formation must occur beyond the asteroid belt, far from the burning heat of the sun.
