The Italian airline Alitalia is said to stand for: Arrived Late in Tokyo, all luggage in Amsterdam.

Flanders and Swan referred to the Irish Airline as “Air Linctus” (Linctus = thick liquid medicine, especially cough mixture)
as opposed to the British:
BO Airways Corporation.

Etihad is an anagram, it has to be an anagram with that random jumble of letters, of “I death”.

TAA used to stand for “Travel Anset Always”, as opposed to “Chance it with Ansett”.

Former brother in law, for a joke, rang up an airline and asked “Is this the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services”, to which the receptionist replied “No, this is QANTAS”.

Try Another Airline was pretty popular back in the day as well. But not a lot of choice as there was a government enforced two-airline policy for decades.

I always liked the Indonesian pronunciation – “Kun-tas”.
