Scientists have developed an eye drop that can dissolve cataracts

Researchers in the US have developed a new drug that can be delivered directly into the eye via an eye dropper to shrink down and dissolve cataracts – the leading cause of blindness in humans.

“While the effects have yet to be tested on humans”

Stuff you put on the outside of the eye as drops is going to be hard to target onto the lens. Embryologically speaking, the lens is related to skin. Most of the rest of the eye is not. It’s a complicated little bugger. And if this works, they should look at using the stuff for anti skin ageing. Probably more money in lotions…

Yes. I’m skeptical.

I’ll go and read the actual paper if I can.

I can’t, it’s a pay paper. But from the abstract:

“Treatment by lanosterol, but not cholesterol, significantly decreased preformed protein aggregates both in vitro and in cell-transfection experiments. We further show that lanosterol treatment could reduce cataract severity and increase transparency in dissected rabbit cataractous lenses in vitro and cataract severity in vivo in dogs”

I think the press concept of a simple drop might be a little hyped at the present level of research.

Dunno about the rabbits…they had their lenses dissected out and swilled around in chemicals by the look of it…

It fixed their cataracts almost always though ;)

In vitro on animals. Hmm, then it may be available for human use in what, 50 years?
