Cloud Iridescence: Rare Cloud Formation

The “fire rainbow,” as it’s being called, is a scientific phenomenon that occurs inside clouds.

Photoshopped? That black looks far darker than it has any right to be. And if the black is unnatural then perhaps …

It could be that you can get a similar photograph from any old sundog (caused by aligned ice crystals in high cloud) by underexposing the heck out of it.

Here’s a hint, something I figure out just a week ago. Although Google image search automatically generates long location names like that, you can get to the same place with a much shorter version – delete everything after the first “&” sign except “tbm=isch” which I take it stands for isch=“image search”.

Here is a typical photo of a sundog. Everyone has seen one.

I’ve got heaps of photos of such things and yes if you have any photo editing app then increasing contrast etc., will make the rainbow colours stand out better against the sky. Otherwise the camera cannot actually catch what the eye is able to discern.
