umpire’s call…
bad luck NZ..
Hawkeye tolerance is set at +- half a ball, a good umpire like Ol’ Shep would have given him.
They had Tony Dell on the wireless at lunch time yesterday talking about PTS that he contracted in Vietnam, he’s started some foundation or some such.
He was a big tall fast left armer, opened the bowling for Australia but only played a couple of tests.
I opened the batting against on several occasions but I never rated him as being all that good.
In the interview with Jim Maxwell he was down on everything that was wrong with modern cricked, it was all doom and gloom.
Jim asked him at the end if he could find a positive to end the interview on but he couldn’t.

“What a day for Australia. What a day for Usman Khawaja. What a stupendously excellent day for David Warner. The highest individual score by an Australian in a single day of Test cricket. 244 unbeaten and you would not put a world record score past him, given his completely untroubled innings and an absolutely listless New Zealand attack.”
How quick they forget.
“July 11, 1930. Don Bradman walked out to bat after 11 balls on the first morning at Leeds, and walked back at the end of the day unbeaten on 309. Arunabha Sengupta relives the day when the entire cricketing world came to a standstill in awe of his relentless run making.”

Unless I am wrong, Bradman made more than 244 in a day on one other occasion, and made precisely 244 on another day.
Still, this is the greatest number of runs scored by an ordinary mortal Australian in a day.

They’ll shake hands just before tea I’d say.
The received wisdom is that the cork in the batch of balls is defective although an autopsy on the ball cadaver has not been performed.
The ball has been changed 20 times or more but here is the rub, the replacement balls are sourced from previous matches where an innings completed with a similar number of overs bowled with the ball.
These balls would not be from the same batch.
This match will be remembered for it’s balls.

NZ not exactly out of it. De facto 6 down due to UK’s injury. Lead is 241. 66 overs min left in the day.
Scenario: If they can take 4 wickets in say 8 overs, for another say 30 runs, the target will be 271 off 58 overs. Not easy on Day 5 but not impossible.
