Subject: Esperance Fires
A couple of small fires were initially seen about 4 km to the west of me on the 15/16 November, but by the 17th and stronger winds were blowing it in my direction, I knew then I was in trouble, having had a similar occurrence 10 years earlier.
This was when the fire picked up speed and began advancing towards me.

Here it was getting closer.

And closer, that is my guttering on the left.

And even closer, that tank collects rainwater from my roof.

Fortunately the wind changed slightly and pushed the wildfire across the southern boundary of the property, the winds had been gusting to 100 km/hr by this stage and had it kept coming at me, I doubt if I could have saved the house.

Moving past on the southern part of the property and heading east, where there was a solid wall of flame running for kilometres.

These were taken on the 18/11/15, when the main fire had passed and the flanking flames were burning all the vegetation that had been left on our eastern boundary. These photos were taken from the front gate and looking over the road. I was hoping at this stage that the wind did not shift in my direction.

This is the aftermath of the fire taken on the 20th, where its intensity can be judged at how everything had been burnt. The column of smoke was from the remains of the fire near the coast at the southern end of Stockyard Road.

If that bottom photo is convenient to you it might be an interesting project to mark a spot and take a weekly photo from that spot.

Nothing much will happen until after good autumn/winter rain. This is alkaline coastal scrub country, so lacks the diversity of where I am.

No, saw it all ten years ago. You will just get a picture of green as the new vegetation begins to grow, of which very little detail will be seen on that type of photo.

Unfortunately they would look worse than yours. Very difficult to capture the differences of vegetation in that setting. I take thousands of photos of individual plants. I do take landscapes, but only those with contrasting detail, otherwise they are just flat and uninteresting.

Sorry about that interaction with the Observer. All I wanted to do was show what conditions were like in Esperance during the recent fires. It is not a common occurrence, so thought it might be of interest. I did not expect it to be trashed the way it was. It is really not surprising that very few threads are started here, with chat being the main outlet, it is just not worth the effort.

They were the ones with the loss of life and some 250 k fire front.
The stuff neat PF is coastal heath and would be lucky to be 2 meters high. More a scrub fire than bush fire.

You live in a very beautiful area. It always seems such a waste to see it burnt in this way. Do they know how these fires were started?
As suggested earlier, it could be interesting to “watch” it regenerate via a series of photos. Perhaps the view with your gutters or the rainwater tank could be easier.

These were taken on the 18/11/15, when the main fire had passed and the flanking flames were burning all the vegetation that had been left on our eastern boundary. These photos were taken from the front gate and looking over the road. I was hoping at this stage that the wind did not shift in my direction.

That’s too @#$%^ close for comfort. I like the suggestion above of taking photos once a month from the same spot to show regrowth.

Please do the following the regeneration thing. I think pf and I compared photos when we had a burn about 10 years ago too. I won’t fill his thread, but here are a couple of mine. I was particularly interested in the way the grass trees came back. We have Xanthorrhoea minor.

I also wrote a sort of journal, and then a piece for the Trust for Nature people. I called it The Phoenix of the Bush. There were bigger fires around Victoria around the same time, so mine was a very small project, and I do not have formal training in the subject. I did have some help from a local lady who grows the plants for revegetation areas. She was amazing. She could look at the first two germination leaves and often tell what plant was coming back. I admit we had some rain shortly after the burn. If pf’s is anything like ours, the ants will already be working in the sand.
(Our land at Digby was sand dunes when the dinosaurs roamed, so grey sandy stuff)
Somewhere I have a series of three spots I chose and photographed quite frequently initially, then at longer intervals. Not quite sure where they are at the moment, and this is pf’s story here anyway.

No, according to pf it was probably Kingy.
Yep, I drove 750km to light a fire so that I could drive back and then send one of my best crews and trucks 750km away to fight it while I try to find other crews to fight fires here, just so that I could be accused of arson by some imbecile on the internet.

Lets get a few things straight Kingy!
I was here and very close to the main fire path, which I remind you had 41 degree temperatures and wind gusting to 100 km/hr. Have you even experienced this sort of thing yourself? I doubt it! I live on a property in its natural state i.e. covered in bush and in such extreme fire conditions I can assure you it is no picnic being here and ready to protect it.
I didn’t ask you to come 750 km, nor did I want or need your assistance, as I am very self-sufficient and used to fighting my own fires, so don’t try and hang that on me. And due to the circumstances and the high risk to myself and property, what do you suggest I do as a volunteer, leave the place and not be allowed back by people like you? I think you must be joking.
And before you go and accuse me of such things, kindy get your facts straight first!
As you might have guessed I am damned annoyed that a Climate Change Denying idiot should be considered a reliable source of information.

Sorry, I have had too much on my plate to follow the chat thread to find out what was said.
“41 degree temperatures and wind gusting to 100 km/hr. Have you even experienced this sort of thing yourself?”
Yes, several times. I almost lost my best mate in one of those. He spent months in the burns unit. He was on the back of a light tanker trying to defend someone elses property.
You may not have needed our assistance, but Scaddan did. Our guys spent half the time fighting the fires with them, and half the time providing grief counselling due to the very recent death of one of their members. Our crew was recalled on Saturday due to the potential for more emotional distress, and also as we needed them for other fires.
This is shaping up to be a particularly bad fire season. We are not even in Summer yet.

Yep, I drove 750km to light a fire so that I could drive back and then send one of my best crews and trucks 750km away to fight it while I try to find other crews to fight fires here, just so that I could be accused of arson by some imbecile on the internet.
Sounds legit.
I wonder if pf has volunteered to do anything useful there. My guess is no.
Lets get a few things straight Kingy!
bla bla bla, bla bla bla
And before you go and accuse me of such things, kindy +get your facts straight firs+t!
As you might have guessed I am damned annoyed that a Climate Change Denying idiot should be considered a reliable source of information.

I just started this thread to show the wildfire that raged around me for several days, no more. I did not expect the character assignation that followed, however in order to address some of the offensive remarks, something might be salvaged from the thread and additional information added.
The Observer said:

This is simply not true, although I don’t feel obliged to reveal all my past life just to satisfy a fool like the Observer. However I shall refer you to a post I made in a blog of mine 9 years ago, which will provide information of the problems with fire management today and why these large fires will persist on a regular basis.

Below is a quote from the Observers sock puppet jjjust moi:
>>The main fires were 80k or so NNW from where PF is. Near grass Patch and Salmon Gums.
They were the ones with the loss of life and some 250 k fire front.
The stuff neat PF is coastal heath and would be lucky to be 2 meters high. More a scrub fire than bush fire.<<
Yes there were large fires to the north of Esperance, but there was also another, the Stockyard Creek fire (near me) at Merivale. This fire was reported on the news and filmed on national TV on all the main channels. It was written up extensively in most papers and discussed at length on the radio. However like the science of Global Warming, the Observer missed them all.
There was considerable acreage burnt and I understand a couple of homes, the power was off for 6 days and the mainline telephone is still down. The flames flared several hundred feet into the air, well above the 2 metres stated above. The reason the flames reached such heights is due to the high dune system around Stockyard Creek, which runs from west to east (the main direction of the 100 km/hr winds).
These dunes are very steep sided especially on their southern sides and covered with dense vegetation to 3 metres in height. At their base on the dune gully near me are thickly wooded areas, mallee eucalypts to 6 metres in height. The Stockyard Creek gully is something like 50 metres deep and very densely covered in tall vegetation.
The wildfire flames set these areas of dense vegetation alight, which raced up the very step sides being feed by the huge fuel load. These fires were completely unsurvivable if you were anywhere near them, let alone if caught between the dunes.
The photo below is taken from where I am immediately to the north of them. The gully behind the first dune is much deeper than the floor in front and the larger dune behind (above the creek) is deeper again.

Your thread PF.
Anything about sympathy for the deaths. The loss of stock and buildings where the REAL fire was?
No, look at me poor me.
A class fucking dickhead.
This thread is about my experiences during the fires, not of others that I had no additional information other than what was on the news.

Still don’t understand, possibly because I did not make many posts as the fire approached. There were just a handful of short posts relating to the intensity of the fire and my anxiety.

Have you any compassion for all the lives that will be lost due to global warming and of which you have had a hand in delaying. Doubt if it even entered your head!
