I have a noisy hot water pipe that makes a thumping sound when the hot water tap is turned on

which start around 20 seconds after I turn the tap on I can around thirty or forty separate thumping noises which then go away

which Ive read seems to be the hot water pipe expanding and rubbing near studs

Is there any way to fix it?

put a pressure tank inline, 2L should do he trick

Find the pipe and secure it properly.

It’s called “waterhammer”, caused by pressure waves passing along the water pipes. You can buy a valve to fit in line that will fix it.

For other solutions see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_hammer#Mitigating_measures

The pressure pulse moves at the speed of sound and the multiple thumps come from reflections. One solution is

it amplifies at the start as well, can be destructive to some appliances and outlets

you’ll be needing to replace your pipes with those made from Invar 36

I gather this happens too when just the hot water is turned on and at any flow, and its not the non-return valve and/or PRV hammering.

if it’s a gravity feed system, could be the float valve in the roof tank bouncing

yeah could be, had few ballcocks on troughs, near meter with short lengths of poly, can be a pain, dad stuck an inverted airbottle on one fixed it (bottle was part of fire extinguisher system on his Stuart tank)

i’ve had PRV hammer on troughs where ballcocks are not rigidly supported, in fact one was so loud I could hear it half way across the paddock sounded like a two-stroke engine.

around launceston, in some suburbs the pressure was so high, the float valves used to scream.. only way to fix it was replace them with dual action float valves

The easiest thing to try that might fix it is to replace the washer.
The tap doesn’t have to be leaking for the washer to be rogered.

That makes sense. It could just be a loose or damaged washer.

Floating washers in open taps are a common cause of the water-hammer noise. Most likely culprit is the tap washer in the cold supply to the hot water tank. This is open, and can move with the pressure waves. Check all the open valves (hot and cold) – eg: washing machine, toilet cistern supply, external tap with a timer on it, etc.

How to fix: buy a washer assembly with a brass stem. Flatten the stem with a hammer, so it is a very tight interference fit into the tap assembly. (A fine file can be used to relieve the washer’s stem if you have flattened it too much). Reassemble. Turn the tap off tightly, before re-opening it.

Another cause could be the flexible supply hoses on the washing machine. Sometimes they can bang the wall or washing machine, in response to the pressure waves.
