I have a new dog. She is a bit stinky. After a bath, she stinks within a couple of days. Vet says not to wash her no more than once a week and to only wash her with dog shampoo, which has a different PH to shampoo for humans.

There are websites which suggest that bicarb soda can be brushed through a dog’s fur to get rid of smells. Can this be harmful to the dog?

bicarb is pretty safe for dogs, but might be worth taking to the vet to find out what is actually causing the smell.
If it’s dry skin, a change in diet could solve the problem

Thanks SS. Just wondering, if PH is so important, whether this is likely to change it.

I know she had not been fed the best diet when in foster care, but I think the smell is a kelpie thing.

not likely to change it, more to absorb the smell.

Dunno much about kelpies, there were a couple of them on the farm, but they spent a lot of their time swimming in the dam, so commonly smelt like wet dog

In my experience it sounds like a dietary thing. Never heard of smelly kelpies…or rather that kelpies are smelly

+1

try adding a tablespoon of olive oil to the food, see if that helps

Daisy Mae barely smells like a dog. it’s quite weird. It might be the dry desert environment, but even when we have rain and she accidentally gets wet (she hates water, except frozen stuff) she still has barely any dog stink. I haven’t bathed her for ages.

We changed her diet a while back because of vomiting and itchy ears, but all that has cleared up now. She didn’t smell like a dog before that change and still doesn’t.

Our kelpie was never particularly smelly and he wasn’t washed often.

you could be accustomed to it.

A mate of mine reckons his dogs don’t smell, his family concur.

But jeez does the house reek of dog…

Our dogs weren’t allowed into the house.

Yeah, when I visit my friend in Melbourne the smell initially overwhelms but they are all used to it and after a few days you don’t notice it either. But it is a punch in the face at first.

Nup. I’m very sensitive to smells. The woman who stayed here when we went to Houston also noted that Ms Mae has very little stink.

I can smell it faintly when she snuggles up to me on the couch and gets warm.

Okay. After every bout of exercise, it seems that the smell ramps up a little to the point where after a week, she reeks. It is just that dog smell, but is overpowering.

I’ll give the bicarb a try and see if it helps.

I used to brush bicarb into my old dog’s fur with no ill effects.
