Ok trendsetters – let’s call it an idea rather than a project at this stage.

I have a mangy bit of lawn, but with good retic. How does one turn a patch of lawn into a putting green? What steps to follow? How to go about it?

(I can take pictures during daylight hours tomorrow and post them oif you need some further info)

First of all, define putting green. If you want to putt on it, you need the correct species.

Second, preparation is everything. Remove all weed species and their seeds.

Yeah. High maintenance. Lots of work to make any putting green type lawn, anywhere in Australia and indeed anywhere on earth.

That’s a good start then. It is couch. Was laid as roll-on for a wedding. Was absolutely beautiful and lush once, but the wedding was several years ago and it’s been left go for a while.

From my days working for a seed retailer most Melbourne sandbelt clubs used a very fine couch – Zip Bermuda. But it not only the grass as mentioned previously you need to prepare the ground first, including levelling with a lawn rake or such like. To get the best putting green effect you also need to top dress with a good quality sand

Sand should be no problem. I was thinking about sieving a few barrow loads of it. This property is nearly all sand.

the other thing to get would be a good quality mower and keep the blades sharp.
A roller you can get from bunnings, they sell the drum ones that you fill with water to the required weight

The big maintenance is verti-cutting and coring twice a year.

Topdressing only, encourages thatch. This has to be verticut.

Coring removes old roots and thatch and gives the grass a new growing medium.

a heavy sheet pegged along one side to the hills houst, a length of irrigation pipe pinned diagonally down each side and the base of the ‘funnel’ pegged to the ground.

Makes a good practice fairway for irons and returns the balls to you

Don’t muck around, hire a dingo or bobcat.

Excavate the soil and put in solid formwork.

Call up your local supplier and get a couple of metres of concrete. For a couple of slabs of beer, you can get some young blokes to screed and finish it.

Head down to Bunnings, get out the credit card and buy some natural looking artificial grass. It’s about $20 per square metre.

Glue it down.

No watering, no mowing, no spot weeding just kick back and enjoy.

he’ll need a metre or 2 of sand to go on top of the artificial turf if he wants to do it properly

I’ve only moved in here a couple of months ago. Right now I haven’t done anything with it apart from general mowing with the old Victa. I know I’ll need to mow more often and with a different style of mower.
