Brain Study Seeks Roots of Suicide

A clinical trial will look at the neurological structure and function of people who have attempted suicide

Suicide is a puzzle. Fewer than 10% of people with depression attempt suicide, and about 10% of those who kill themselves were never diagnosed with any mental-health condition.

Now, a study is trying to determine what happens in the brain when a person attempts suicide, and what sets such people apart. The results could help researchers to understand whether suicide is driven by certain brain biology — and is not just a symptom of a recognized mental disorder.

You do not have to read this thread, and I am not responding to emotional abuse

and this thread is not directed at you

Its Not a shit fight its a legitimate study

your not the only person who has negative thoughts, I get negative thoughts myself and so do others

It does not mean that people are not allowed to study suicidal people

if you don’t want to participate, that is up to you, this study is being done in America

personally Im fed up with the stigma that gets attached to a person who gets suicidal tendencies,

Im also fed up with the discrimination that goes along with mental illness

but that does not stop me from discussing it in a general way

if you want help, that is up to you, your the one who makes choices

I hope you make good choices, Im not a counselor

if you want help, that is up to you

wild guess on my part, but’d think mental discomfort has something to do with it, and perhaps that the discomfort’s not trending toward relief.

we do live in strange times I might add, thoughts seem to dominate over mental states, in fact the term mental states seems to have migrated to the territory of pathology some, which’d be depressing if I didn’t have a nice little home in me head.

One should not forget that brain biology changes with mind-related activity (referred to as neuroplasticity). High activity of the mind, such as rumination, worry, mental proliferation, etc., not only brings about structural changes in the brain, but also changes genetic expression. On the other hand, less activity in the mind (such as when engaged in an intellectual activity or when engaged in meditation) is linked to less activity in the default mode network of the brain as well as favorable structural changes in the brain (see for example: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26106351 and http://pps.sagepub.com/content/6/6/537.abstract ).

Wouldn’t the easiest way to commit suicide be to book into hospital where you can catch a number of antibiotic-resistant diseases?

I’m a rare person in that nobody I know has ever committed suicide. I only know of cases second hand, such as the teenager who committed suicide after being convicted with a friend of date rape, I know the girl.

It would never have occurred to me until today to ask which suicide. But I have the statistics in front of me courtesy of halcyon maps. Yearly death toll due to different methods of suicide.

5500 post traumatic stress disorder
Small CO2 gasing self
7500 sleeping pill overdose
9500 self injury blood loss
16000 suicide following schizophrenia
73000 alcohol poisoning of young people
Large drug overdose
210000 suicide from bipolar disorder
360000 pesticide overdose most common suicide method in 3rd world
1.34 million, aids
Other self-incuced deaths are even more common, lung cancer, copd, coronary heart disease.

Different types of suicide attract different people.
