Excitin’. Wishing everyone clear skies.
pity btm. great night in the west. saw lots, over 30 at least. not all geminids as they were going the wrong way. saw some nice bright ones and one that lasted at least 3 seconds and covered over 90 degrees of the sky. saw three in the sky at once. saw three sats one that might have been an iridium flare.
That’s a lot of wishes.
and lots of threes….cue rama.
;-)
I think I’ll move to WA. The stargazing seems to be better, and the sun sets over water, making green flashes more likely. Although I have seen the sun set twice in 15 minutes: it set, then reappeared above the horizon, then set again. That was over land.
I’ve seen a 3 hour sunset. Heading for Perth, I flew from Brisbane just before sunset and the sun lingered just above the horizon for about 3 hours. It was surreal.

I was in Ballarat, Victoria, at the time; it was winter, and there’d been snow that day.

That’d be similar to being at one of the poles for summer, when the sun doesn’t set. I’ve always wanted to do that.

tatooine…

we were underwhelmed

yes, in a secluded spot just past mandurah.. I saw what you explained but we were expecting more frequent I guess.. Still, BU WG and I had some good astro photography practice
geeeez bunch of oliver twists!!!!
it was more a trickle than a ‘shower’ as such..
i have low expectations ….
nah, i thought it was great. had a mattress, pillow and doona on the front lawn. nice dark skies.
I only saw a few, but wasn’t out there all that long. Didn’t seem noticeably better than previous years. Still, it’s always enjoyable to have a peep at the night sky.

we did say that you would have a good view… we had an interesting time. Just that the meteors were always just out of camera shot. frustrating
probably the (disappointing) shot.. I’m not convinced the one on the right is a meteor.. maybe the ISS? the left one in the bottom corner seems more meteorish… anyway, an interesting evening

The ISS moves much, much slower than a meteor so if either of those things is a meteor then they both are.

I have a previous shot with the same line, lower.. I had the camera on bulb, so had the shutter open for a long time , but I’m just guessing
I remember driving out the road to avoid the one street light in town years ago. And then dark adapting on the side of the road…only to have a bloody great truck tear down on high beam. Anyway, I did see some streaks of light. I don’t think I need to do it every time.
:)
one on the right looks like a satellite. not ISS as i received no notification from nasa that it was visible in WA last night.

is there a way to find out what it is? too many satellites… in space
At about 4am I saw a faint but fast-moving satellite in the north, heading east.
there are online satellite tracking databases. need time, direction and location. i can’t recommend any as i rarely use them. the ISS has a notification email service from NASA.
Looks like they’ve photoshopped the head of the kid on the right. Must have been too ugly.

I’d like to believe that this time. Really I would.
