SpaceX successfully lands Falcon 9 rocket months after explosive end to earlier flight

SpaceX has successfully landed its powerful Falcon 9 rocket in an upright position at Cape Canaveral, an historic first in the company’s bid to make reusable rockets.

“The Falcon has landed,” a commentator said above the screams and cheers of people gathered at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California, as images on SpaceX’s webcast showed the first stage of the rocket touching down.

I always thought the Tintin method of rocket landing was crazy. Apparently not as crazy as it sounds.

thats how they were proposing landing on the moon at one point, some huge rocket landing arse down on the moons surface

as time went on they realised it wasnt feasible financially

skylon is the better way for cheap space cargo

just takes off from a runway

I still think it’s crazy. Not so crazy on the Moon, because of the low gravity, but insane on Earth.

Does Thunderbird 3 land the same way?

No but it doesn’t fly the same way either.

Found the answer, sort of but not quite, it lands horizontal until just before the ground (like shuttle) then tilts vertical for final set-down. That actually makes more sense than Spacex, because you can use aerodynamic lift that way to help counteract gravity, and the final flip kills forward momentum like a hang glider landing.

I told Obama when he was first elected he should develop real thunderbirds but he didn’t listen.

It is cool that those 1950s sci fi movies got it right.

But for me, the whole thing looks so ungainly, dodgy, energy intensive etc I wonder if it will actually be the next big thing.
