Somewhat famously, Australia* has no landed antipodes. That is to say, there is no place on Australia’s home territory that is opposite any other land.
What didn’t occur to me until recently is how snugly its reverse image is tucked into the North Atlantic gap opposite which it lies. There’s really not much in it: if you nudge Australia a smidge you end up with antipodes.
Bermuda’s antipodes lie about 25 km west of the coast of Rockingham in Western Australia. The antipodes of Antigua are about 100 km NW of Imperieuse Reef WA. Santa Cruz das Flores in the Azores is opposite a point about 90 km east of Flinders Island, Tasmania.
*By this I mean your basic six states and two territories, not external territories. Christmas Island, Heard Island and Australia’s Antarctic Territories have landed antipodes.
