Subject: So, problematic words that break the internet
http://www.lssu.edu/banished/
So, if the wordsmiths at Lake Superior State University get their way, this is the last time a story lead like this will ever make it into print or broadcast.
Answering a question by beginning with the word “so” is just one of a dozen forms of wordplay that made it onto LSSU’s 41st annual List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness. The tradition created by the late W. T. Rabe, former public relations director at Lake Superior State University, is now in its fifth decade. Compilers hope this year’s list will be so popular that it will break the Internet.
“Overused words and phrases are ‘problematic’ for thousands of Queen’s English ‘stakeholders,’” said an LSSU spokesperson while ‘vaping’ an e-cigarette during a ‘presser.’ “Once something is banished, there’s no ‘walking it back;’ that’s our ‘secret sauce,’ and there’s no ‘price point’ for that.”

I’ve been all over the new phenomenon of answering a question with “so”
It started about 18 months ago and came out of universities and then went viral on the radio and TV.
It’s an insidious many headed hydra that wont be controlled until someone detonates themselves in an ABC big ideas studio.

I find it somewhat amusing that an American university is making prescriptive comments about “the Queen’s English.”

Heh. When our browsers which are set to UK or Australian English still cannot work out what English actually is.

So, something called a Kardashian has dropped their drawers and broken the internet…
And now for something completely the same, a woman with three buttocks!

Absolute rubbish. None of those are either problematic or overused, except for “stakeholder”, which always gives the impression of someone about to impale me on a wooden stake.
If you want to take aim at anything, take aim at overused and problematic “Green”, “my bad”, “sustainable”, “terrorist”, etc.
As has been pointed out, the increase of use of the word “sustainable” is not sustainable.

Those expressions may well be overused in the USA, but some of them are not familiar to me.
Surprised they included “vape” which is just as legitimate a verb as “smoke”.

Overuse, I suppose. Instead of describing something as “problematic” people could just tell us what the problems are.

Now went around the commercial stations then too that first three letters of alphabet abbreviated one, like a fucken contagion at some time, all converging during the great transformation which is still going on.
It’s to get and keep attention, on the stories now, increase the authority, the importance, the relevance, a capture word, but too has some overlap with so.
