I can’t remember how many blisters I have had in my life, but the numbers are high.. yet my heels are not scarred…. at least not to the naked eye.

Blisters, once popped, are just like wounds, if you have an open would on the arm or leg that size, you are going to get a scar.. so why don’t we get scars all over our heels?

maybe because it is only the top layers of skin. scars may only develop if the wound opens to reveal underlying tissue below the dermises.

I think because what forms underneath is not scar tissue but is new skin cushioned under a saline bubble of stressed skin.

In general, very superficial scars, such as those left by a blister, heal extremely well and leave no permanent mark or scar. The top layer of your skin (the layer involved with most simple blisters) is composed of cells that are dead already, and so the cells underneath simply take their place after the blister flakes off. Because their is no structural damage beneath, the cells from the sides don’t have to grow in to replace them. This ingrowth and the collagen that is needed to make it happen is what makes the new skin look different from the old when you have a scar, and explains why blisters usually don’t scar. It is important to note, however, that this depends on the size and depth of the blister, as well as how much trauma the area continues to experience. If the area is constantly being bothered, your skin will respond by eventually forming a callous. For the most part, this thickening of your skin is reversible with hydration and protection, but it can also be unsightly for a time. As you mention that the area is still puffy and discolored, it is important to make sure it is not infected, which could leave a permanent scar by affecting more tissue. Please speak with your doctor or Boris about your concerns

so I guess that’s one reason they say not to pop them (apart from it being a sterile environment)

Which leg?

‘leg’, not ‘stump’

stump has some blisters on the underside of the knee at the moment, but they don’t leave scars

my friend is immunocompromised and he has an open wound on his leg that started as a blister but has not healed in months… but maybe leg skin is different to heel skin?

I think we change our skins regularly as dead bits flake off.

I currently have a very large one on my heel from a 7km walk this morning .. it doesn’t hurt until it gets bumped or knocked. While an open would hurt until it crusts over.

Walking further than 5 km in heels is never a good idea.

that’s from a blister? so maybe the skin is different slightly.

Tattoo artists dont like to tattoo heels generally, but that’s mainly because of the amount of wear that heel skin gets with shoe wear. but I wonder if there’s more to it than that

hehehe we were discussing this the other night while talking about the price of some designer shoes… a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s were around $1300… I said that if I ever paid that much for shoes, I’m sleeping in them and learning how to run in them too

>>How many layers of skin do you have?

Skin has three layers: The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone. The dermis, beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands. The deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermic) is made of fat and connective tissue.<<

Looks like you penetrated the third level.

The severity of the injury must determine whether a blister heals without blistering. A burn will often blister and leave a scar. Blisters from abrasion not so much; perhaps because we minimise the severity of the injury once it begins to hurt.

I have been getting cold sores on my mouth as well as at the base of my nose since I was roughly 5 years old. None have ever left a scar.

i would imagine that burns, while blistering superficially, actually are damaging tissue to a deeper level. and that’s why they scar.

There’s some awesome anti-friction tapes around that will prevent that. Fixomull is widely regarded as the best.
