You mean you set off without a plan?

Apart from: “Let’s look for some kind of leak, somewhere in the paddock. It might be fun.”

>What is meant by “we figured nothing”? It does not appear to be idiomatic English.

Hunter, Larry and I walked 2+km over the top of an underground water pipe, about 4km total up and back, it was hot. I inspected the ground 6metres either side of the line where I know it to be, and dug a lot of holes checking the moisture gradient for indications. The task is complicated by recent rains and a lot of subsoil moisture, which pockets also. The water leak is in a 1” poly water pipe ~60cm under the ground, somewhere. The flow is ~1.5Lminute. The flow isn’t enough to show indications (wetness of soil, or green grass) of any sort on the surface, not yet anyway.

The job was tedious, especially for the 8.5yo Hunter.

By figured nothing he meant the entire effort was a waste of time, it yielded nothing, we found no leak. I’d expect he was a little disappointed that the effort did not result in finding the leak, which was the objective of the exercise.

The part of the exercise he maybe doesn’t appreciate (because of his age likely) is that the leak is presently unfindable and that it required a considerable thoroughness to determine it to be presently unfindable. It’s like best effort to find the leak.

So, he thinks we worked out nothing from the effort, but that wasn’t the case for me. I did mutter something out there about the leak being infindable, that I’d learnt that (of that effort) but by then I was hot and thirsty and sick of hearing this is boring and he wasn’t listening.
