What sort of things would you want to have around in a power outage?

I’m thinking

radio with batteries
portable LED light
lighter and small camping gas stove
12 volt solar / battery system for 12 volt fans, lights, radio, music, 12 volt kettle
some good reading material

How long are you planning for the power being out?

with hot days we lost the power for around an hour or so

I think they move the load around a bit on excessive days

been three days over the last six months all with one hour outages

more so for brownouts which reset the digital clocks, around 8 to 10 times

fires make outage times worse

I built the factory that until recently I worked in; the company produced solar power charge controllers, and all lighting was powered by batteries charged using solar panels. The rules say that you have to have a backup light (battery powered, with the battery charged by the mains) in case the mains power fails; we pointed out that all lighting was battery powered anyway, and wouldn’t fail if the mains failed (we had backups and safeties for our batteries and lights, too.) Didn’t matter. We still needed a lights circuit to power a light that was never used, and never going to be used, just in case the light circuit – which was only connected to that light – failed.

I suppose if fire or whatever knocks out the wiring/power (or power gets turned off when sprinkler system goes on or whatever) you still have local power at the light, much the same as an exit light. Related, fire alarm/detectors have to be on their own power circuit.
